- The long and short of it is that Risen is a fun action adventure RPG. It is very rough around the edges, not to the extent of some other games in the genre that came out around the same time (looking at you, Two Worlds), but it has charm.
Aaron Price · Feb 12, 2023 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The world is still interesting, and I am impressed there are no loading screens, even in the original. The world is very brown and gray for the most part but there are some interesting enemy designs. Overall this looks and feels like a 360/PS3 era game because that is exactly what it is.
Ken McKown · Feb 03, 2023 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Overall, Risen is… fine. It’s a game that was influential and beloved in its time, but that time was long ago, and many other great games have taken its place since. So, unless you’re a die-hard Risen fan, your money is likely better spent elsewhere, though that’s no fault of the game itself.
Mike Alexander · Jan 30, 2023 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Risen would be slow even under the best circumstances -- which doesn't necessarily bother me -- but it's impossible to know which quests are important and which are peripheral, so you'll spend a lot of time lost and dying, accomplishing nothing, feeling frustrated by the combat. Without any narrative momentum to push you roughshod through the game's busted mechanics, Risen feels that much more alienating.
Joseph Leray · Mar 29, 2010 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Risen is the kind of game you want to love, and if you give it a chance, it may still suck you in. It is not, however, generous with its delights. This is a demanding mistress, expecting a lot from you before gifting you in return. As numerous as the quirks are, tolerant RPG lovers that appreciate ambition will find something here to sink their teeth into. Just be prepared for the bitter aftertaste.
Kevin VanOrd · Mar 02, 2010 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - If you're not willing to figure some things out for yourself and the idea of freedom of choice doesn't sit well with you, chances are Risen isn't going to mesh well with your gaming sensibilities. If you're familiar with the genre and are looking to take the next step into a mature, well-realized fantasy world, then this is it. Its combat system isn't the greatest and its pacing is inconsistent, but for those who put in the time to see all Risen has to offer, it's an experience that won't be forgotten.
Charles Onyett · Feb 23, 2010 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Combat isn't the be-all and end-all, though. Risen excels when you're exploring, chatting with the hundreds of NPCs, and adding your own touches to the developing storyline. Struggle through the admittedly bad third-person action, and you'll find a role-playing experience well worth your time. But I won't blame you for not being willing to put up with this shoddy technical execution when there are so many great RPGs out there, either.
Adam Biessener · Feb 23, 2010 Reviewed on X360 - Great role-playing games are always huge time sinks, and Risen is no different - it'll easily last you 60 hours. The issue is enjoyment. If Piranha Bytes hadn't designed Risen while giving accessibility the finger, then it would have had a chance of being a slow burning but absorbing RPG. As it is though, it's impossible to recommend. You're better off playing through Bethesda's Oblivion, even if it's for the 50th time.
Wesley Yin-Poole · Oct 02, 2009 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Risen is not an RPG game for the impatient-minded. It moves along at a slow burn, and bettering your character can be a meticulous and painstaking process at times. The challenge is steep early on, yet the lack of instant gratification and power loot hording is actually refreshing. Faranga is a finely crafted setting for what ultimately turns into a tremendously deep and very satisfying fantasy RPG. It has a few shortcomings; they're largely forgivable, once you get lost in the adventure.
NATHAN MEUNIER · Oct 02, 2009 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It looks rubbish and it plays very poorly in the combat stakes, but yet, there is something about the world that will keep you trying. There is a solid hook, an urge to see what is on the other side of the swamp, or the town, that keeps you going even when you swear you are done.
