- If you grew up way back in the olden days like me and can’t stomach another anime RPG then YIIK is worth a look. YIIK: A Postmodern RPG is out now on Nintendo Switch.
Ed Orr · Feb 22, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Overall, I think if YIIK had a more polished battle system with better attack input (and Alex didn’t stop the game to talk to the camera) YIIK would be a lot more appealing to me than it has been. BUT, I have a feeling that this game will actually be well received by gamers who enjoy more obscure titles. Check out YIIK: A Post Modern RPG on the Nintendo Switch eShop for $19.99.
Kaelyn Daugherty · Jan 30, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - YIIK is a fairly interesting tale turned into convoluted mush with a dash of unnecessary and unearned social commentary. Whether its depression or racism, any heavy issue this game attempts to tackle is executed so poorly. I really wanted to like YIIK but with all of its missteps, I was always reluctant to go back to its quirky world.
Michael Ruiz · Jan 16, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - YIIK: A Postmodern RPG, sadly, never shines as brightly as it does during its opening hours. There's enjoyment to be had here, sure, especially for anyone with love for the '90s – but all of the references to Chrono Trigger and Pogs in the world can't balance out the pleasure-less battle system and overly complicated levelling up mechanics.
John Cal McCormick · Jan 16, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - YIIK: A Postmodern RPG is a dazzling explosion of stylistic presentation and compelling strangeness. This might go down as “EarthBound for a new generation,” and much like EarthBound, the quality is difficult to score, since it is based less on the precision of design and more on an intangible, heartfelt payoff.
Eric Bailey · Jan 16, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Despite YIIK's stunning art direction, kicking soundtrack, and occasionally interesting plot point, it suffers as a result of its clunky combat, tedious grinding, and poor puzzle design. Postmodern texts aren't always enjoyable--Wallace's Infinite Jest features walls of text that list every chemical name for prescription drugs under the sun, spanning pages upon pages at a time. However, Infinite Jest has substance. For the most part, YIIK doesn't.
Cian Maher · Jan 16, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Ultimately, YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG is a hefty chunk of well-considered and well-intentioned 90’s nostalgia wrapped in a clunky experience. The abundance of style and fun soundtrack make up for a lot of the systems that don’t quite land or the inventory that’s messy and unintuitive. YIIK is sure to appeal to those with strong nostalgia for the period or an appreciation for throwback JRPGs.
Dan Hodges · Jan 16, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - YIIK: A Postmodern RPG is an unusual game that is as mysterious as it is humorous. While the balance of levity doesn’t quite match the level of the supernatural the game takes on in its later chapters, it is still a game that is well worth your time. If you’re a Gen Xer like me, a casual RPG player looking for a quirky new title, or even a fan of the metaphysical, then perhaps this odd and offbeat game is just what you’ve been searching your parallel lives for.
Heidi Hawes · Jan 16, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Playing YIIK is a challenge, one that is not fun, is a slog to get through, and doesn’t pay off. You just drag from one draining fight to the next, and even when a boss battle shows up and has some droll gimmick or affectation to it, it’s hard to appreciate it because you know you’re going to be staring at the joke for however long it takes to whittle its massive health bar down.
Lucas White · Jan 16, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - There is one specific dungeon and a handful of other standout moments which perfectly exemplify how this approach to abstract storytelling could thrive in video games. Unfortunately, YIIK ultimately fails to deliver in its execution, and it's difficult to recommend for anyone that isn't willing to sit through 25 hours of drudgery for a few hours of psychedelic brilliance.
