While Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 is undoubtedly a classic game that has been beloved by many, the question is whether or not it lives up to the hype in its current PS5 incarnation. Sure, it may have given you a nostalgia rush to revisit the game, but does it hold up to modern standards of gameplay and graphics?

Let's start with the graphics - while the game has certainly received a visual upgrade, it still feels like a game from another era. The levels are relatively small and the character models lack the detail and nuance of more modern games. While this may be part of the game's charm for some, it's hard to deny that it feels a bit dated compared to other modern titles.

As for the gameplay, while it may have been groundbreaking at the time of its original release, it now feels somewhat simplistic and repetitive. Sure, there are a variety of objectives to complete in each level, but the basic mechanics of skating and performing tricks get old after a while. There's not much in the way of depth or strategy to the gameplay, which can make it feel a bit shallow compared to more modern games.

That being said, it's important to acknowledge that the game is still fun to play. The controls are tight and responsive, and there's a satisfying sense of flow to stringing together tricks and combos. It's a game that can be enjoyed in short bursts or longer play sessions, and there's something inherently satisfying about nailing a difficult line or unlocking a new trick.

Ultimately, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 on PS5 is a solid update of a classic game, but it may not be for everyone. While it certainly delivers on nostalgia and provides a fun, arcade-style skating experience, it can feel a bit dated and simplistic compared to more modern games. However, if you're a fan of the original game or just looking for a fun, mindless skating game, it's definitely worth checking out.

A Nostalgic Experience!

This isn't a remaster, it's a full remake. That said, very little has been done to the mechanics of the game and the level design. The new songs are great, and the old ones still are as well, with a sad few omissions from the original two games.

It's really amazing how well the game has held up since mechanically, almost nothing has changed. It just looks a lot more beautiful and has more features, such as online play including leaderboards that will make you refrain from ever saying, "I'm good at Tony Hawk!" ever again, and more in-depth skater and skate park creation systems. This is a dream come true for 90s/00s nostalgic gamers, and also worth playing even for the youngest generation.
