- Despite being in development for eight or more years, Dragon Marked for Death could have actually used more time in the oven. I'm sure there is a great game buried somewhere in there but between its lack of balance, less-than-ideal controls, boring levels, and unfortunate co-op requirements, the end product isn't nearly up to the level of the rest of Inti Creates's catalog.
CJ Andriessen · Apr 14, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Despite these grievances, I did enjoy my time with Dragon Marked for Death. It’s a fun and frantic throwback to the side-scrolling RPGs of the 32-bit era. However, I don’t think the game is for everyone. Those who are looking for a purely solo excursion are probably going to find themselves growing weary by the journey’s end due to its balancing quirks that make boss battles marathon events. Likewise, the lack of single-console co-op is a serious disappointment. Still, if you’re looking for a spiritual successor to Mega Man Zero and have some friends who’re willing to take the fight online, you’ll find the game delivers an experience unlike anything else on the Switch.
Francis DiPersio · Apr 09, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Overall, Dragon Marked for Death is a polished experience that draws on a lot of existing genre sensibilities, but with a heavy focus on aspects that make for a good co-op experience. The classes are thematically coherent and entertainingly distinct, and the levels are just varied enough that gliding through one for the first time is always aurally and visually pleasing.
Ginny Woo · Mar 26, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Every stage comes with a recommended level, and every item is only usable if you’re strong enough to put on. This is a major component in making the game feel slow. While I love the moment to moment action, the pacing can still get downright glacial at times. If you’re hoping for an RPG experience, you’ll be rather let down. As far as action platformers go however, Dragon Marked For Death is a ripping good time.
James Paley · Feb 22, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Dragon Marked for Death surprised me, even knowing I'd enjoy it after my time with it at Anime Expo last year. Quite a bit has changed since I last saw it, but that's not a bad thing. I'm not sure if I could recommend the game for anyone looking to play it without a group without a giant asterisk next to that recommendation, but there's really nothing else like it, and what it tries to accomplish it does so in spades. It's certainly not for everyone, but Dragon Marked for Death left its mark on me.
James Galizio · Feb 09, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Given the high standard of gameplay that Inti Creates has shown in many other titles it’s released over the last several years, it’s hard not to be disappointed by Dragon: Marked for Death. Although the art direction is a definite plus, this is merely an inoffensive and unimaginative co-op side-scrolling RPG at best.
Mitch Vogel · Feb 01, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Dragon Marked for Death is a frustrating experience because there are some good ideas buried behind some poor decisions. Level design always feels like it’s tuned for more than one player even in the solo experience, which is disheartening, especially after working through a big quest to only fall short and have to start back at the beginning. Coupled with some other minor annoyances and it’s easy to get irritated.
Casey Gibson · Jan 31, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Though the game takes a bit more guessing than I’d like to figure out, it’s still a great game. As a huge fan of Azure Striker Gunvolt, I was expecting more polished gameplay from Dragon: Marked for Death and it delivered. Rushing through maps to fight bosses and pick up loot before time runs out is great fun, and definitely worth the small learning curve the game has. It already feels like a game that has potential to add a lot more depth to as well, and I hope that the online stays populated for a long time to come.
Bill Gallon · Jan 31, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Ranging from the extremely limited move set of the characters, lack of any new skills/moves, and a bit too much repetition, it leaves a strong feeling of how much better it could be. A heavy reliance on multiplayer likely dooms this, as the online population is relatively small, and the match-making is atrocious. Sad, as the graphics are great, and it could have been really fun with even a little bit more depth.
Eric Ace · Jul 15, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There is greatness in Dragon Marked for Death, held back partially by its Monster Hunter-style contract system but more powerfully by a late-game difficulty spike (and resulting grind for experience) and a general opaqueness about how to actually beat the game. If you can gather a team of four players and don't mind consulting a FAQ every now and then, this might be a good investment. For casual fans of action-RPGs, however, it shouldn't be a priority purchase.
