- AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative is an entertaining trip featuring a sharp story by Kotaro Uchikoshi, though it may not be for everyone. If you prefer to be told exactly how to solve puzzles, the easier difficulty levels can help, but ultimately the game’s nature is to be esoteric and reveal each Somnium’s secrets piece by piece. Fans of the first game will definitely enjoy this trip, while new players can hop right in without any major spoilers if they so choose. Either way, nirvanA Initiative is one game you’ll actually want to finish.
Paulmichael Contreras · Jul 12, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It's a philosophical sci-fi story, but with clear limits to its future tech, and ultimately reasonable explanations for its impossible crimes. Above all, this is a game that respects the art of the detective story, and that does a decent job of presenting its own.
Tom Sykes · Jun 29, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative isn’t a perfect game, but it offers one of the best mysteries I’ve ever seen in a game. Combine that with a wonderful cast and somnium sequences that blow away the original game, and you have a visual novel that is a must-play for anyone interested in the genre. AI: The Somnium Files was minor Uchikosi, but nirvanA Initiative stands among his best work.
Andrew Thornton · Jun 26, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - AI: The Sominum Files – nirvanA Initiative is a great mystery adventure, and worth playing, even if you’ve never played the first. Spike Chunsoft actually goes out of its way to emphasize that you do not need to have played the first, and characters will explain certain connections, relationships, or events as needed if you didn’t.
Eric Van Allen · Jun 24, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative takes some time to get going, but it emerges as one of the best of its ilk. The story is wonderful, the game elements are highly improved, and even the action sequences are more impressive (and ridiculous) than they were before.
Andrew Farrell · Jun 24, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Spike Chunsoft has done it again with AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES nirvanA Initiative. They tell an incredible murder mystery that’s a ton of fun to figure out, all while solving brain-bending puzzles and talking to a colorful cast of endearing characters. There are a lot of performance issues and bugs, but those are nitpicks compared to just the sheer joy of diving into people’s minds to solve the case.
David Flynn · Jun 23, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative is one of the most interesting visual novels we’ve played through in a while. The murder mystery at its heart is brought to life by some great writing and quirky characters alongside the satisfyingly integrated, beautifully balanced Psync puzzle elements. Even with some minor control issues, there is a lot to love in this game even if you never picked up the original. Highly recommended if you're even a little bit curious.
Trent Cannon · Jun 22, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Just like its predecessor, AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative is full of heart, hilariously self-aware, and reflective on the style of writing that built the foundation that built the Somnium Files series. Both AI games are deeply personal, subversive, and reflective works, some of my favorite games in the genre. Now that we have one miracle sequel that ended up great, I could go for another one in a few years.
Cullen Black · Jun 22, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES – nirvanA Initiative is an impressive follow up to an underrated gem and one that should be on the radar of anyone who appreciates compelling stories in their video games.
Jae Lee · Jun 21, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - A second series of serial killings is fair game in AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES – nirvanA Initiative, a title focused around the established world of the prior game with newcomers that are just as hungry for the truth as Kaname Date once was.
