- Everything except the candy corn zombie heads I could swallow as zombie comfort food. But because it’s trying so hard to be a Metal Gear game, and falling so short, Metal Gear Survive is the wrong kind of off-kilter. Sometimes a Kojima game without Kojima just isn’t a Kojima game. Sometimes it’s just a snack to tide me over. 23 days to go.
Tom Chick · Apr 25, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - So this is it. We officially live in a post-Kojima Metal Gear world. Konami has given us Metal Gear Survive and I found it… much better than I would have expected. The survival elements are a little harsh, but I found them fun to manage and work around. Combat is fun, besides a few enemies that never got above being annoying.

Those that manage to stick around, however, should expect to find something worth surviving for. With a confusing and frustrating jumping-off point, it may be hard to break into Metal Gear Survive. Nick Plessas · Mar 05, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - They'll sell 'em to ya, no problem. It has all the trappings of a game that should probably be free-to-play, but Konami is asking $40 for it up front. That's a bad deal. After Phantom Pain was released and the split between publisher Konami and series creator Hideo Kojima became public, some folks lamented that we'd never see another game on Konami's Fox Engine ever again. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.
Jeff Gerstmann · Mar 05, 2018 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - For all the fervent hatred of Konami that forms the current gaming-hate-bandwagon of choice, based on its own merits, Metal Gear Survive isn’t a terrible game. It’s not a great one for sure, and certainly not near the pedigree we expect from a Metal Gear product, but it’s a serviceable enough survival game that benefits greatly from layering in a few of The Phantom Pain’s systems.
Jon Sutton · Mar 04, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Most of you have probably already made up your mind about Metal Gear Survive. I think Survive has some redeeming qualities and, had it focused firmly on its multiplayer, I may have enjoyed the experience more. As it stands, there are just so many better titles in the survival genre, it’s hard to recommend this game to anybody. I’m sad to say that Metal Gear Survive has squeezed any ounce of hope I had for this series I only recently got into.
Jordan Boyd · Mar 04, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Though it's not totally devoid of positives, Metal Gear Survive suffers the curse of being wholly unremarkable in pretty much every way. Bland survival gameplay, unoriginal ideas and unresponsive melee combat make for a tedious experience. Metal Gear Survive is certainly a functional game, but someone forgot to add the "fun".
Ashley Bates · Mar 01, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - There’s a weird, enjoyable story in Metal Gear Survive for players who make it past the game’s grueling opening hours, and there are flashes of a great survival game. But with a threadbare connection to the 30-year history of Metal Gear and a comparatively shallow game made in the shadow of The Phantom Pain, it’s hard to recommend enduring the whole thing.
Michael McWhertor · Mar 01, 2018 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - So even though there is some fun to be had, Metal Gear Survive lacks personality and creativity thanks to the reused content, repetitive zombie gameplay and an awful story.
Kyle Nicol · Feb 28, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Metal Gear Survive is a fitting end to a storied legacy that first began in the 8-bit era. While the connections to the proper Metal Gear mythos are tenuous at best, what’s hiding beneath the surface of Metal Gear Survive is one of the greatest titles in the survival genre to ever reach gamers’ hands. The online co-op missions have had me hooked for a week now and I am still finding new tools and strategies to fend off wanderers.
