- There's no denying that Kojima has a vision, a singular style that touches every facet of The Phantom Pain. Missions begin and end with credits that name the supporting players and the Kojima Productions employees responsible for writing or designing each chapter. I estimate I was told no less than 100 times that The Phantom Pain was directed and produced by Kojima. It's a charming design quirk that regularly reminds you of the people who crafted this bold, weird, impressive game.
Michael McWhertor · Dec 03, 2015 Reviewed on PS4, XB1Read full review - Kojima has said every Metal Gear since 2 would be his last one, but this time with Konami seemingly burning the door behind him along with the building, it feels more final. We’ve seen one of the last gaps in the Metal Gear saga close, and to be honest it’s bittersweet. But if this is the last Metal Gear Solid, the last time we’ll see Solid Snake or Big Boss, then they couldn’t have ended it any better. Its a flawed game to be sure, but a flawed diamond is still a diamond. Metal Gear Solid V is a spectacular game, possibly the best stealth-action game ever, and worthy of being the series’ swan song.s’ swan song.
Wyatt Hnatiw · Sep 18, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - A new standard for open-world interaction, and an incredible sign-off to a spectacular, often infuriating, series. This is one of the most ingenious, lovingly crafted games of all time.
Dan Dawkins · Sep 16, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - As a game, The Phantom Pain excels. The stealth and action work beautifully in the open-world setting, and maintaining your Mother Base gives you plenty of rewards. It’s long, fun, and gives players tons of variety. ...Somewhere between Guns of the Patriots and The Phantom Pain is a perfect Metal Gear Solid that I don’t think we’ll ever see.
Mike Minotti · Sep 14, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The Phantom Pain is a game I can't stop thinking about and didn't want to end. How this immense accomplishment in game design came from Kojima Productions, a studio helmed by a guy who always seemed like he was more interested in directing movies than making games, is completely beyond me. ...It left me feeling inspired and excited about the future of open-ended, mechanics-driven video games, and I hope it isn't another seven years before we see its like again.
Brad Shoemaker · Sep 12, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the most divisive game in the series for me. On one hand I love the game play. Building up Mother Base, the missions, the stealth and gunplay all feel so refined. The open-world sandbox is endless fun. The Metal Gear portion though sadly disappoints. The boss fights are lackluster, the cut scenes are not as wacky and outlandish as I expected, and the story never really grabbed me.
Ken McKown · Sep 11, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Phantom Pain is hands down one of the best game’s I have played in a long time. The open world environment offers you an endless amount of ways to play. Phantom Pain is a game you can sink over 100 hours into and still come back for more. Even if you haven’t played past Metal Gear games, Phantom Pain is a great place to start.
Sidd Masand · Sep 11, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain might not be the perfect game, but it's as close as any title has ever gotten. Don't let the destruction of Militaires Sans Frontieres fool you — this is Outer Heaven.
Jon Ledford · Sep 09, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Not just being set in a big or beautiful world, but having the building blocks in place to let players have moments that feel like they belong to them. This is the best I’ve seen that done to date. Metal Gear Solid V is a standard-setting sandbox game that makes perfect sense on PC, and is likely to be the most influential Metal Gear Solid game since the first.
Samuel Roberts · Sep 07, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The game itself is engaging and rewarding, while it’s the script that’s become clunky and obtuse. It’s swings and roundabouts, but the result is a game of quality that rivals any prior Metal Gear Solid game – it’s just got its priorities the other way around. ...This is, to date, Kojima Productions’ finest videogame if we’re looking at it as a piece of pure, unabashed entertainment.

About the game
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan has brought a new edge to the Cold War, and in 1984, a one-eyed man with a prosthetic arm appears in the country. Those who know him call him Snake; the legendary mercenary who was once swept from the stage of history and left in a coma by American private intelligence network Cipher. Snake is accompanied by Ocelot, an old friend who saved him from attack when he finally awoke. Now, Snake’s former partner Kazuhira Miller is being held by the Soviet forces in Afghanistan. Snake must undertake a solo mission to rescue Miller and prove to the world that the legendary mercenary is not dead and gone. That first step will lead to a path of vengeance against the very Cipher that slaughtered so many of Snake’s men, and to a battle that will embroil the whole world...What started in Ground Zeroes... must finish with ”V.”
