- I never thought that I would ever have the chance to play Final Fantasy IX on a Nintendo console, and, with Nintendo Switch, Square Enix has perhaps found the perfect place to experience the genre classic. Complete with its twists and turns, you can chip away at this roughly 40-hour quest both at home and on the move, which I can only hope will allow more players the time needed to reach the game’s grand and, for some at least, tear-inducing conclusion.
Alex Seedhouse · Feb 26, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Simply put: The Nintendo Switch version of Final Fantasy IX is an inferior version of a superior entry in the series, one that deserves much better from Square. If you’ve never experienced the game before, then by all means, drop $20 and take the ride — you won’t regret it. However, if you’ve already played through it on PlayStation, mobile, PC or PlayStation 4, you won’t miss anything by skipping it.
Todd Rigney · Feb 25, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you’ve got fond memories of this game, the question gets a little harder. The new graphics are beautiful, but maybe this isn’t what you’re looking for. Sometimes nostalgia demands a preserved experience, not a polished one. This version is a lot more than the original ever was on the PSN, but it is a modified version. I’m just happy to have this game on the Switch, but I recognize that it’s far from a perfect port. If you can see past the minor flaws, Final Fantasy IX is an excellent investment on the Nintendo Switch.
James Paley · Feb 21, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you’re a fan of RPGs and somehow haven’t played Final Fantasy IX yet, it’s certainly worth a download for the privilege to play this classic on the go. On the other hand, if you’re just getting into RPGs, Final Fantasy IX may be a little too obtuse and archaic to recommend when compared to more modern releases. Whichever camp you may fall in, the bottom line is that, warts and all, Final Fantasy IX remains a great RPG to this day; you likely won’t regret picking this one up.
Mitch Vogel · Feb 21, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - That’s not to say people should avoid this re-release, because despite the problems there’s a strong game here that’s worth playing and experiencing. FFIX is reminiscent of a simpler time, boasting a strong narrative and quality of life features that make it easy to get into. I just wish it had a better presentation, one that a game of this quality truly deserves.
Bryan Rose · Feb 20, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Final Fantasy IX on PlayStation 4 has rekindled my imagination that for years I thought I had lost, giving me a reason to return to these characters and story that deserve to be experienced by any fan of the genre. Final Fantasy IX on PlayStation 4 is upgraded and re-rendered up to the best possible version for every fan of Final Fantasy, new and old.
Azario Lopez · Oct 03, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Final Fantasy IX PC is a fine port of an extraordinary game. While the backgrounds are often an eyesore, the gameplay, characters, and charming story of the original hold up and then some. Final Fantasy IX is a must play entry in the RPG genre, and this new version is the best way to experience the magic of the best PS1 Final Fantasy game.
Paul Sullivan · Apr 27, 2016 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I can very confidently say that it’s the definitive version of the game (not that the mobile port is hard to beat), and with asking price, replayability, and nostalgia all considered, Square Enix’s latest classic remodeling is exceedingly difficult not to recommend.
Griffin Vacheron · Apr 26, 2016 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Final Fantasy IX for PC is surprisingly well done for a sixteen year old port. Square Enix could have simply just thrown together something with little effort, but instead what we’ve received is a far better experience. With that said, it’s still not a perfect port as we ran into at least one controller related issue, and the pre-rendered background art can be hard to look at at times.
Adam Beck · Apr 22, 2016 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - There is no question that Final Fantasy IX is worth it. The only question in your mind should be “should I buy this game again if I already have it?” My answer? Absolutely.
