- Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward spins one of the year's best yarns, tackling various topics with maturity, intelligence and even a little humour. Its smart puzzles can be a little fiddly, but if you have any interest in story in games whatsoever and can deal with its murderous subject matter, this is a must play that will keep you engaged for dozens of hours.
Mike Mason · Dec 05, 2012 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - It’s a pity the controls are rather awkward – on Vita at least – with neither touch nor button controls ever feeling entirely natural. Your ultimate destination, meanwhile, is determined by your choices to betray or ally with your fellow contestants after each room is conquered, an idea that would carry greater emotional weight but for the ease with which you can skip across the paths you’ve opened to reverse your decisions, a rare instance where the game’s structure is to its detriment.
Edge Staff · Dec 04, 2012 Reviewed on Vita - Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward is a deep, engaging, and incredibly intelligent visual novel. It's a shame that the game doesn't do more with the hardware, but its meaningful player decisions, taxing puzzle elements, and unforgivably mature themes fuse to create one of the best Vita titles so far.
Robert Ramsey · Nov 28, 2012 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward calls itself a visual novel and that description couldn’t be more accurate. The excellent story hooked me in from the opening minutes and I didn’t want to let go. With branching paths, multiple endings, and truly mysterious characters to interact with, Virtue’s Last Reward will keep you thrilled for hours on end. While there isn’t much in terms of gameplay, those who pop the cartridge into their 3DS will enjoy one of the best narratives the system has to offer. As Zero would put it, “Have a nice tragedy…”
Jason Jasicki · Nov 15, 2012 Reviewed on 3DS - As fun and challenging as the brainteasers in the room escapes are, they're merely dressing for the fantastic writing, memorable characters, and stunning plot twists that could only be presented successfully in a game format. This is an adventure that anyone who appreciates quality storytelling should not miss.
Heidi Kemps · Nov 08, 2012 Reviewed on 3DS, VitaRead full review - Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward comes with the highest recommendation as the very best game on PlayStation Vita and one of the greatest games of this generation. No game is perfect, but this thrill ride comes damn close.
Kyle Prahl · Nov 07, 2012 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward's story is absolutely bonkers, but untangling its many secrets is an addictive enterprise. There's tons of plot to discover, and the many storylines cross and reference each other in subtle ways that reward the diligent player. Puzzle fans will undoubtedly wish there were more Escape rooms, but those that are there are strange and fun.
Susan Arendt · Oct 30, 2012 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Virtue’s Last Reward follows up on 999 wonderfully and delivers everything you’d want in a sequel. It’s got the same kind of creepy soundtrack and cerebral gameplay 999‘s fans will love, but done far better. Part of that is due to it being more user-friendly, making VLR an easy recommendation for anyone who missed out on 999. Everything about how VLR plays is improved, resulting in a better experience in every way imaginable.
Jeremy Peeples · Oct 26, 2012 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Two years ago, Aksys was shocked by 999's success. This year, they shouldn't be shocked when VLR matches, then exceeds, its predecessor. This sequel is more twisted, more brutal and more memorable than that first volume, it's solidified Zero Escape as a series, and it's an experience I recommend to every gamer – if you're over 18, and if you've played 999 first.
Lucas M. Thomas · Oct 23, 2012 Reviewed on 3DS, VitaRead full review - Virtue’s Last Reward kept me addicted, challenged, and constantly guessing. As the sequel to 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors, it lives up to its legacy and invigorates the graphic adventure genre. Don’t let this one pass you by; VLR is one of my favorite games this year.
