  • Yooka-Laylee ended up being bittersweet for me. I did enjoy my time with it, however, despite the pleasant trip down memory lane, rose-colored glasses weren’t enough to stop me from seeing the inherent flaws that the game had. Still, to those interested, I would say that this game’s worth a shot — especially on the Switch.

  • It’s not a bad game by any means, however. By following the Banjo blueprint already set out, the fundamental gameplay elements on offer are superb and Yooka-Laylee is still fun, mostly. It’s a solid start for Playtonic, I just hope that with their next game, they let their talents run wild rather than sticking too close to the subject matter.

  • When Yooka-Laylee was originally announced as a Kickstarter project by former Rare developers, it gave fans of the 3D platformer hope that a nearly dead genre could return to its former glory. It’s unfortunate, then, that Yooka-Laylee is no more than a mediocre attempt to capture nostalgia from the days of yore. In a year that has given us some truly innovative and special 3D platformers that pushed the genre to new heights, I can only really recommend pushing through Yooka-Laylee’s pedestrian campaign to the most enthusiastic of old Rare’s fans.

  • Yooka-Laylee is a fun throwback to a simpler time, but in the process some things got lost in translation. Whether it’s rose-tinted specs or just modern game design sensibilities, something doesn’t feel right with Yooka-Laylee, even if it runs great on Switch. I guess it just can’t compare to the likes of Super Mario Odyssey.

  • All told, Yooka-Laylee is a worthy modern tribute to the collectathons of yore, and it is highly recommended for Switch owners. This feels like a game that belongs in 1996, but with all the quality improvements of a game made in 2017, making for an excellent blend of new and old. Though it can be a little uneven at times, the game as a whole manages to succesfully achieve its goals.

  • Overall, Yooka-Laylee is a game that I have mixed feelings for. The controls, pacing, and characters are paper-thin, but I still cannot help but enjoy the game for what it is: a nostalgia-fueled trip back to when the 3D platformer was the gaming genre. This an experience suited for those that either wish to return back to the late 90’s, or for those who are dying of curiosity. Otherwise, wait for a sale and some patches to help make both Yooka-Laylee a better experience and an easier pill to swallow.

  • Some long-forgotten issues from way back in the day crop up again in this throwback action-plaformer, but even if you aren’t playing it through the nostaliga of someone who grew up with Banjo-Kazooie or other adventures like it, you’ll still find a solid game to play in Yooka-Laylee.

  • Yooka-Laylee is built on a foundation of tried-and-tested gameplay, and it’s packed with content, considering it’s priced at $40 rather than $60. Anyone that’s eager to revisit the 3D platformer genre will be well served by this game. However, those that don’t enjoy a sense of nostalgia for jump-and-runs of days gone by might not find much to enjoy among its rough edges and throwback atmosphere.

  • From the promise of the Kickstarter and the people behind it, you might have expected Yooka-Laylee to be like a great band, getting back together for a new album after a long hiatus. What we've ended up with is something that feels like a cover version – of something a bit old-fashioned, not especially relevant today, and more than a little bit flawed – but if you loved Banjo-Kazooie, then you'll probably love the cover version just as much, and that's just fine.

Yooka-Laylee is exactly what Playtonic promised, and also exactly what I expected. While some of the levels are not great, the overall package takes me back to a different time where the genre thrived. For better or worse this game recaptures what made those games special, and frankly if it starred a certain bear and bird combo, it could have easily been a sequel to a game from that era.
