- Summary: There’s a scarcity of places to save your game, but it’s not enough to pass on Xeodrifter. It’s minimalism proves that there’s still a place for simplicity, even on modern powerhouse consoles. It’s like the first Metroid game only, you know, playable.
Jaime Carrillo · Feb 23, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - From an artist’s perspectives, it’s a 2D pixel art game, with some nice ambiance for music. I didn’t get blown away by it, but I think that’s because the game isn’t going for that. I believe it was going more for fun in the game design rather than in the art, and that’s totally okay. Plus if you like old school video game art, this works fine, otherwise it’s just a “play-it-safe” art style and soundtrack. And that’s really all there is to say about Xeodrifter. It plays great, it’s hard to beat but addicting.
Xander Morningstar · Feb 17, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you’re looking for a simple, straightforward open-ended platformer that’s easy to get into (or one that’s good for speedrunning), this is the game for you. If you’re looking for an in-depth experience that you can really sink your teeth into, this certainly isn’t. We’d generally give this one a recommendation - it’s a great ride while it lasts - but just bear in mind that it won’t last you long.
Mitch Vogel · Feb 15, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - So long as the player expects nothing more from Xeodrifter than what it is very upfront about providing in terms of content, retro-aesthetic and gameplay, then it will be hard to feel disappointed after playing this game. It’s not perfect, but there is a sincerity here that is likely to charm even the most sceptical of gamers.
Sophie Halliday · Sep 02, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I’m of two minds when it comes to Xeodrifter. It’s an homage to a game that I absolutely love, and Renegade Kid did some truly commendable things here. On the other hand, I didn’t get much excitement from exploring its worlds. It’s a game that will only appeal to the gamers that grew up with the games that inspired it, and even then, it might leave you wanting more. If the game was more budget priced at $5.99 then absolutely; buy it and finish it in a couple hours. But with the $10.99 price tag it feels a little thin.
Anthony Gomez · Aug 27, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Xeodrifter condenses the core gameplay of Metroid into an experience that blends action and strategy without much filler and that doesn’t waste a moment of the player’s time in the process. The controls are smooth, while the animation and sound design fits the NES-to-SNES era that Renegade Kid loves to a tee. Anyone who enjoys Metroidvania gameplay will enjoy this; even if its repetitious boss battles stand out as a glaring weakness, the core game is a blast to play and surprisingly diverse as well.
Jeremy Peeples · Aug 27, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Xeodrifter is a Metroid-inspired platformer that borrows heavily from other games to try and create something unique. However, the monotony of gameplay mixed with the lack of variety creates a game that is ultimately less than the sum of its parts. It might draw inspiration from several games, but rarely does it feel like those pieces come together in a fun or cohesive way.
Brad Gruetzmacher · Aug 27, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Xeodrifter (Wii U) is otherwise the same game you loved on 3DS, including all pros and cons. You’re still fighting the same boss six times, and you’re still bravely trekking back with no health pickups after boss encounters. There’s still a little too much reliance on invisible passageways to find all the health and weapon upgrades. ...I highly recommend Xeodrifter no matter what system you get it on—and by getting it on one, you’ll automatically have it on both. It’s a win-win!
Zachary Miller · Aug 04, 2015 Reviewed on Wii U, 3DSRead full review - Xeodrifter is a fun little game that Nintendo fans should get a kick out of. We wish it was longer and had more visual variety, but those criticisms are mainly because we enjoyed our experience and wanted more of it. We'd love to see Renegade Kid revisit this world at some point in the future, and wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who hasn't played the 3DS version already.
Lee Meyer · Jul 30, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Xeodrifter simply feels like an incomplete adventure. Beaten in just four hours, the conclusion is as unsatisfying as the content. Although, I hope that Renegade Kid realise their missed opportunities and return to the stars to deliver a more grandiose sequel.
