- But to me, the entire game feels lifeless and old. The presentation fails to capture the excitement of the real thing. The gameplay doesn't match the product it's attempting to emulate. And the layers upon layers of plain-looking menus feel like they were ripped out of a PlayStation 2 launch game. Something as dynamic and as ridiculously over-the-top as the real-life WWE deserves better.
Jeff Gerstmann · Dec 07, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - The result is a game completely focused on action, and on letting you customize and record that action. While some elements still need improvement, SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is ultimately successful because it embraces the dramatic fights and outrageous showmanship that are the heart and soul of the WWE.
Chris Watters · Dec 03, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - This year may go down as the year of change, and WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 isn’t going to hurt its chances. It’s a solid entry for the series, with more notable innovations and improvements than the last couple games in the series. No molds are broken, but maybe next year it’ll come through with a solid TKO.
Game Trailers · Nov 21, 2008 Reviewed on X360 - So, we return to the challenge Kurt Angle and TNA Impact! posed at the top of the review. SDvR09 is better than last year's effort, no question, and it's a better game than TNA Impact! on account of it being yet another iteration of a tried and trusted game engine and packed full to bursting with features old and new.
Wesley Yin-Poole · Nov 12, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Over the years, THQ has refined and re-defined the series, and they’ve build a juggernaut of a wrestling franchise. If you haven’t played a wrestling title in years, 2009 is a great opportunity for re-entry into the genre. With its out-of-control number of features and match types, along with its easy to pick-up-and-play mechanics, Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 is a solid title all around.
Nick Chester · Nov 10, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Matches are fun, but they feel just like last year thanks to a lot of the same animations and same interactable objects. Still, Road to WrestleMania is a breath of fresh air. You're probably looking at around 15 hours to complete all the RTW storylines and bonus objectives. It'll take you a while to build up a Superstar in Career, but that's not necessarily a good thing.
GREG MILLER · Nov 10, 2008 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Overall, SmackDown! Vs. Raw 2009 is a perfect title for wrestling fans. It has tons of different match types, plenty of customization options, and provides some new and interesting ways to interact with other fans. This is definitely the most complete-feeling WWE title to come down in a long time, and it is great that the series has wrestled itself back into the spotlight.
Amanda L. Kondolojy · Nov 09, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - The overall value of this game is simple. This is hands down the best wrestling game on the Wii and puts any other wrestling game on Nintendo’s little white box to shame. On top of that, it is the best wrestling game I have played in a while on any system. There might be some rough edges like a few graphical mishaps and laggy online, but the overall package is fabulous. Those who wrote off the WWE Smackdown vs Raw series, such as myself, need to do themselves a favor and try this out. You won’t be sad.
VGChartz Staff · Feb 07, 2009 Reviewed onRead full review - As it is, we were greatly surprised at how the developer has clearly listened to all the criticism doled out previously and delivered one of the best wrestling games for years. Being a wrestling game, it certainly won't be to everyone's tastes, but for the first time we can safely say that this is a title that fans of the sport can really grapple with and, ultimately, love.
OXM Staff · Nov 07, 2008 Reviewed on X360 - Nevertheless, as an overall package, WWE SvR 2009 offers some worthwhile improvements from 2008, most notably its entertaining ‘Road to WrestleMania’ game mode. Whilst the deep control scheme can feel awkward at times, especially if you’re coming into the franchise for the first time, if you have the time or the inclination the rewards are there for the taking.
