  • I don't know if it's the kind of realism Wreckfest is chasing or just some technical issues, but the game could stand to add some arcade-y "oomf" to its collisions. Or some speed. Anything, really. Outside of being a pretty good-looking game with highly detailed modeling, the racing experience of Wreckfest is rather dull.

  • Wreckfest is one of the more impressive Switch ports we've seen, taking a game that already had performance issues on more powerful hardware and delivering a relatively stable version with reasonable loading speeds and all its debris-flinging carnage fully intact.

  • Wreckfest is a shockingly good time on Nintendo’s handheld, even if it clearly doesn’t hold up when compared to other console ports in terms of visuals and performance. Being able to crash a bunch of cars inside an arena while driving a deranged combined harvester, on-the-go? I’d be a madman if I said I wasn’t having a ton of fun doing that.

  • With its vastly improved framerates and bumped-up resolution, Wreckfest on PS5 is the definitive way to play the game, whether against humans or the game’s more-than-decent AI drivers. Wreckfest might not be the new console generation’s ultimate racing sim, but it has some depth, a unique set of chops, and is a lot of fun.

  • Undoubtedly, Wreckfest itself is an absolutely fantastic racer and you'll have a blast on Series X regardless of whether you stick with the free 4K, 60FPS patch or go one step further with this paid next-gen upgrade. This is without doubt the definitive way to play the game on Xbox Series X, but thanks to that free patch a couple of months ago, there's really no need to pay the extra money unless you're a devoted Wreckfest nut.

  • Ultimately, if you’re looking to have fun smashing up cars, Wreckfest is an entertaining choice. Sure, this isn’t built from the ground-up for PS5 like Destruction All-Stars, but it executes that core premise a lot better.

  • Other than that, there's basic but useful Activity Card usage to quickly get you into career events, and the online multiplayer functions just fine, although we did encounter some problems with latency there. All in all, though, this is a pretty decent upgrade to a fun game.

  • Wreckfest is an excellent racing game. It has one of the best physics and by far the best damage models in any racing game I have ever played. Combine these with a variety of classic and destruction derby-style races and you have yourself one hell of a title.

  • If all that doesn't faze you (and it shouldn't), Wreckfest more than nails its core gameplay. It's a fun derby racer game that lives up to its FlatOut roots and more. It has a somewhat bare-bones presentation that is rife with bugs and long loading screens, but when it works, it's a remarkable experience from start to finish. If you love this kind of racer, the console version of Wreckfest will hold up its end of the deal and deliver frantic mayhem racing at its best.

Even with these issues though Wreckfest nails that feeling I had when playing classic games such as Destruction Derby. I love the wacky races, the destruction is perfect, and when it works it just feels fantastic. I kept playing through the issues, and I hope Bugbear continues to improve upon the foundation and maybe toss in some of those driver-tossing mini-games from the Flatout series. As it stands though Wreckfest is a solid game that hits a lot of the right notes, with plenty of technical issues that hold it back from being a classic.
