  • White Night does serve up some scares and a few twists along the way, however, there’s nothing particularly different about what this title has to offer over only a handful of hours, even with consideration of the black and white film noir aesthetics including the special mechanics built around it. Despite its eagerness to run with clichés, it at least sticks with its style through to the end and does everything competently enough to make it a satisfactory experience for anyone looking for a colourless curio.

  • While I liked the story itself, it isn't a particularly well-told tale, related to you in voice-over, on-screen text, and journal entries, which often all give you the same bit of information repeatedly. Like everything else about White Night, it only half-works. The fright and tension, very effective at the start, quickly evaporate, leaving you not afraid of the dark but simply cursing it.

  • White Night's distinctive visual style make it immediately identifiable; artistically, this game's a success. Its few shortcomings aren't to be overlooked, however, as its sluggish, frequently directionless, and deliberately archaic in its design. Don't come in expecting jump scares and big gore; this is a slow-burning experience with an emphasis on style and atmosphere.

  • White Night has other minor issues, such as its lack of a useful map, but these flaws stand out primarily because of the possibilities the game never realizes. ...I wanted to find the next journal entry and see how the story ended, and at times, I was genuinely creeped out by the atmosphere. The pieces that make up White Night could have added up to a great interactive horror story. Sadly, the good game you can imagine is stuck lurking in the shadows of the game it became.

Otherwise White Night was a totally creepy, scary, unexpected treat that I was enthralled with for the entire duration of its gameplay. Fans of older style adventure/point and click games cneed to check this out immediately. Once I started I couldn’t stop playing. It had me by the throat with its mystery, its atmosphere and finally the ending. This is an instant classic in my eyes.

  • White Night does a lot right, delivering a great story which only dips slightly in the run up to its conclusion. The art style is fantastic, and while it hurts other things – like the visibility of the title's many collectibles – the trade-off is honestly worth it. Unfortunately, the release's biggest issues sit in the gameplay department, as it's exceedingly frustrating on far too many occasions. The end result is interesting, then, and worth experiencing – but perhaps not recommended for everyone.

  • Just enough obstacles exist to make that story feel as though it was earned, that the player participated in the telling, but conveying the story is the priority. From clever exploitation of gameplay mechanics to the pages and pages of rich exposition which carefully unravel and the moody jazz soundtrack, everything exists in service to the fiction. In that, it succeeds, and it's a story worth experiencing and deserving of praise.

  • White Night is another game which has remained stubbornly devoted to its art style to the detriment of the actual game tucked away beneath it. It remains faithful to its influences and loyal to its theme, but when its misgivings contribute to make it such an irritating experience, it’s impossible to overlook them.

  • White Night adeptly merges survival horror with noir to create an alluring visual style and atmosphere. However, neither the story nor the puzzles are exceptional, and the game comes up just short. It has substance to its style, but it also doesn't satisfactorily build off its base components – as well done as they are. In the end, like many noir stories, this game exists in the grey.

  • White Night isn’t the most riveting survival horror game I have played in recent memory but it isn’t the worst either. If not for the unique film noir storytelling combined with a stylized black and white look, White Night could have been one of the more forgettable survival horror games of 2015. Unfair enemies and camera issues dampens an experience which otherwise should have been much better than the sum of its parts.

About the game

Set in the 1930s and drawing from the rich themes of noir-era storytelling, White Night blends third-person action, exploration and puzzle-solving with the mature tension, challenge and tone of old-school survival horror adventures. As players investigate a shadowy mansion in the dead of night after a near-fatal car crash, what started as a search for aid will become a desperate quest to unearth the secrets behind the manor’s tortured past.
