  • The GBA link-system was endemic of everything wrong with this game and the clunky mechanics that held the experience together, and taking the GBA out of the mix has done little to improve things 17 years later. At least it looks and sounds good!

  • The scenario and world-building of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles are by far the best aspects of the game and what will push players forward, clearing dungeons despite the tediousness. Some of these flaws were corrected in following Crystal Chronicles games. Perhaps future remasters, remakes, or new projects from Square Enix could make everyone remember the Crystal Chronicles series for brighter reasons.

  • Whether you’re fresh to the series or already experienced Valkyria Chronicles 4 on Switch earlier this year, it’s still worth checking out the original. What it might lack in visual polish it more than makes up for with a rich story, affable characters and satisfying and strategic gameplay. Here’s hoping we see the second and third game make the leap to Switch too.

  • As a ten-year-old game, Valkyria Chronicles still holds up impressively well; this is some of the best strategy action that gaming has to offer and having it available on the go is an enormous plus. Although there are some minor balancing and performance issues, Valkyria Chronicles offers up an emotionally-gripping, beautiful and fun strategy experience that offers a considerable amount of value for the price of admission.

  • Since Into the Breach hit at the end of August, there has been a barrage of quality strategy games on the Switch, so it can be tempting to skip Valkyria Chronicles. But don’t do it. It’s a brisk game, and there are some things like the graveyard for fallen troops that I wish were carried into future titles. War may be hell, but Valkyria Chronicles is a little slice of heaven.

  • Valkyria Chronicles is definitely one of my favorite SRPGs of all time, and seeing another new port of the original is a pleasant surprise. However, with the performance issues in the Switch version, you might consider grabbing one of the other existing ports instead. The Switch Port isn't the cheapest solution to enjoying the original Valkyria Chronicles right now, but since it is for Switch, it is pretty much the definitive way to experience the game on a handheld.

  • If you're a fan of turn-based strategy games and you haven't played Valkyria Chronicles, you need to remedy that. Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is a great starting point. Veterans should also consider starting up another fight to drink in Remastered's slick new visuals.

  • Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is just as great of a game as it was eight years ago. Having it perform better and run smoother is a gift. A few things hold it back from perfection, but I'd rather have a war game strive for something new and risky like this than go with safe boilerplate action sequences. I'm happy Sega took a chance on this one.

  • As far as remasters go, Valkyria Chronicles is well done and holds true to the game’s original vision with respect to elements like art style and presentation. For long-time fans looking for another go and newcomers alike, it’s still a wonderful experience from start to finish for a smart $30. Let’s just hope this isn’t the last we see of it.

Valyria Chronicles remaster is an excellent addition to the PS4 library. Its turn based, real time antics are just as fun and challenging as ever before. If this is a player’s first time trudging into battle, expect to be blown away, as long as patience persists. It’s not all out action and at times can feel a bit too hard, unless the strategies are played out exactly as they should, sometimes making the battles feel almost like a puzzle.

    About the game

Set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of the 1930s, Valkyria Chronicles depicts Europe divided in two and ruled by two super powers: the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, situated in the middle of the two superpowers territories, in an attempt to secure invaluable natural resources. Within this struggle a hero named Welkin, and his fellow soldiers of the Federation's 7th Platoon, are fighting back against the invasion and the Empires attempts to unify the continent under its power.

During the ensuing war the Federation discovers that the Empire possesses a secret weapon, known as the "Valkyria" - an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends. With this new discovery the fate of the Federation's ability to turn the tide of the war, and the hope for a better future, hang in the balance.
