- Valiant Hearts: The Great War is an elegant mix of 2D adventuring, simple logic-based conundrums, and effective storytelling. Its puzzles are a little uninspired, while the game's QTE segments can grow rather tiresome. But Ubisoft Montpellier has told a poignant story with real spirit and invention, and that makes this an easy one to recommend.
Jon Mundy · Nov 14, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - So I doubt that Emile — or Freddy, or Anna, or Karl — believe in Owen's "old Lie": having seen Verdun, and Reims, and Vimy Ridge, they'd rather live for each other than die for the fatherland.
Joseph Leray · Sep 29, 2014 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Don't be deterred from playing Valiant Hearts, though. Despite the few bullet-holes in its hull, it does a great job of combining storytelling and puzzle-solving with an engaging history lesson.
Nadia Oxford · Sep 04, 2014 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - This is a beautiful and conscious game that deserves to be played, even if to just take in its message. If you're looking for something to settle in with this Labor Day, make it this game and harbor a newfound appreciation for those who gave their lives for us to have comfortable ones.
Brittany Vincent · Sep 04, 2014 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - In its best moments, Valiant Hearts is basically a playable history lesson. Its personal, heartbreaking fiction is bolstered by bits and pieces of real-life history that resonate with unexpected intensity. Valiant Hearts strikes a difficult balance in depicting the horrors of war and the hope that peeks through its cracks, but it does so with grace.
Danielle Riendeau · Jul 09, 2014 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - If Valiant Hearts’ gameplay could match most of its storytelling, it’d probably be the best game of the year to this point. As it stands, it’s still a remarkably beautiful piece of interactive entertainment that does a fantastic job of showing players a piece of history in a way that’s easily accessible and yet emotionally engaging.
Phil Hornshaw · Jul 07, 2014 Reviewed on PC - Overall, I couldn’t have been more pleased with Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Beautiful art, moving music and a compelling story that has a heart wrenching and unexpected ending with plenty of subtext for you to chew on, it was an absolute treat to play. While the gameplay itself isn’t complex, the puzzles were surprisingly fun even if not overly hard. It also wins extra points from me for slipping in historical facts and subtly teaching you a history lesson.
Doug Mercer · Jul 02, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Valiant Hearts isn't going to challenge many players' abilities, but it may challenge any preconceived notions about how video games are meant to tackle subjects like war. ...Its rewards are far more emotional in nature, the kind you find in any good story, regardless of medium. Seek this one out, and see it through to its conclusion. It's worth it.
Alex Navarro · Jul 02, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Many people wondered how a World War I video game could possibly work, now that the industry has shifted to more advanced modern warfare, but Valiant Hearts: The Great War dropped us right in the middle of it and ordered us to march. ...Those looking for an advanced, state-of-the-art gameplay experience need look elsewhere, but those who love a strong story and can forgive a few lackluster segments will truly appreciate this Great War.
Jason Fanelli · Jun 30, 2014 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Sadly, a few minor issues keep the game from being as consistent as it should be. Throughout most of the story, a canine companion will help you solve puzzles by squeezing into small, unreachable areas and grabbing desired items. Unlike you, though, the dog can never be hurt and will magically teleport to your side if you drift too far away, making him feel more like a tool and less like a character. It’s hard getting attached to something that’s never convincingly at risk.
