- On paper V-Rally 4 sounds like it should deliver everything you’d want for a rally racer. It has a lengthy single player, plenty of tracks and environments and a decent sized list of cars to tinker with in the garage. Unfortunately what the game does manage to get right is quickly dampened by some rather glaring and unforgivable flaws. It’s a real shame, the Switch has seen two racers make its way to the console in the last month and neither has stood out for positive reasons. Maybe 2019 will fare better.
Ryan Janes · Dec 25, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - V-Rally 4 is an old-school rally game at heart, for better and worse (but mainly the latter). If you stick with it you’ll eventually start to master and enjoy it, but the slippery handling and unforgiving ‘no mistakes allowed’ rally races make getting to that point a real slog. On top of this, its numerous performance issues are so severe that they aren’t just ugly, they’re downright distracting: the result being that although this is now the best rally game on Switch by default, pretty much every aspect of it leaves acres of room for improvement.
Chris Scullion · Dec 20, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - V-Rally 4 features a lot of exhilarating moments that make it one of the most engaging racers I've ever played. A decent selection of disciplines and beautiful graphics make this a good pick-up for any casual off-road racing fan.
A.K Rahming · Sep 30, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Ultimately, V-Rally 4 is a solid if comprehensively unremarkable rally racing game. It offers neither the simulation depth of Dirt Rally nor the arcade racing hijinks of Dirt, straddling the line somewhere between the two. It can be moderately entertaining despite its dry personality, but up against stiff competition, it’s an all too forgettable entry. Perhaps V-Rally was best left in its nostalgia-fuelled haze.
Jon Sutton · Sep 25, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Once you get to grips with how it handles, V-Rally 4 is a competent and lightweight arcade-style off-road racer with a fair bit of charm that harkens back to the series’ foundations. Aiming for spectacle and variety in design, it looks and feels like a 2018 V-Rally game. However, a shallow and disappointing career mode, irritating music, and a handful of visual and gameplay bugs means you’re likely to grow weary in a short space of time.
Jacob Hull · Sep 19, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The game almost succeeds in areas like car selection and track design, but it manages to even muck that up with silly design quirks that reduce the ability to engage with these aspects enjoyably. Most importantly, a racer is only as good as its controls, and V-Rally 4 fails miserably at granting the player any semblance of consistency there. This rally game is dead in the mud, so I’d suggest you steer clear.
Billy Givens · Sep 12, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If V-Rally 4 had a more structured career, I really feel like it would have been a great game. As it is, however, it’s fun until you feel like you’re completing the same events over and over again. Solid visuals and enjoyable handling can only get you so far; once repetition sets in, it overshadows the experience, sucking the fun out of it.
Richard Seagrave · Sep 11, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - V-Rally 4 isn’t exactly a bad game. It boasts really good graphics and a decent sound design, as well as a decent amount of content. The problem is that it isn’t exactly the most enjoyable game out there due to its gameplay. It’s too frustrating for newcomers and far from the standards of what simulation fans would expect. It’s neither a sim nor an arcade game, a competent anomaly that currently sits in a limbo of sorts. However, if you’re looking for a racing game where you can drive around containers in a Cape Town harbor, V-Rally 4 is the best title you’ll find.
Leo Faria · Sep 09, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - V-Rally 4 is a deep and challenging experience. There’s an undeniable issue with the game’s somewhat overly loose controls, but with that to the side, this is every bit as engaging as V-Rally has always been. Everything from the game’s stunning visual and audio presentation to its dynamic systems and its content diversity, has been developed meticulously to produce one hell of a tense second-by-second racer.
Anthony Cole · Sep 06, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - With the WRC series on hold for 2018, V-Rally 4 took the rally-title for Kylotonn. Fortunately, a lot of the racing mechanics are streamlined compared to past experiences, easily allowing for newcomers to jump in and pick up the controls quickly, while veterans will still enjoy the difficulty boosts. Some stages wildly inconsistent with their degree of difficulty - and with only a career mode, and online play the features in this complete game are quite lacklustre. While hours of racing can be enjoyed, this will eventually wear quite thin pretty fast.
