- UnMetal is an incredible tribute to one of the greatest franchises in the medium. While the game pokes fun at the title and highlights flaws and silly elements, it’s clear that it is done with love and admiration for the series. Similar to how Mel Brooks lovingly rips Hitchcock apart in High Anxiety, UnEpic Fran does the same with Kojima. The varied gameplay and creative storytelling will keep you in hysterics throughout. Although some may find the retro gameplay a little grating, fans of Metal Gear and the stealth genre need to experience this side-splitting tactical espionage adventure.
Jaz Sagoo · Dec 11, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It’s a hard task to create something that pays homage to a beloved work, as no matter what happens it will always be compared to that original piece, often unfavorably. Against these odds, UnMetal manages to straddle the line of being both a parody and an exceptional example of a top-down stealth game more than able to stand up to such scrutiny.
Ryan Keenum · Dec 10, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - UnMetal is a love letter to old school Metal Gear with a comedic twist. It excels in stealth and you will enjoy yourself though each of the levels. There’s nothing I would change or feel is missing in my opinion. It’s definitely one of the best indie games I have played this year.
Ian Wray · Oct 21, 2021 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Ultimately, UnMetal turned out to be very different from what we were expecting it to be. That’s not a bad thing, and we were pleasantly surprised with what we ended up getting, even though this is a game that isn’t going to appeal to everyone. It really depends on how you approach this game: if you go in expecting a Metal Gear-like experience with cheap jokes thrown in the mix, as we originally did, then there is a good chance you’ll end up disappointed.
SebastiaanRaats · Oct 12, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - UnMetal is a tricky one, really. It doesn't play brilliantly and we didn't really find it funny at all, but it is consistently presenting new and entertaining ideas to complement the core simplistic stealth gameplay, with plentiful genre changes and a metric ton of references, callbacks and metahumour that will definitely appeal to plenty of people.
Stuart Gipp · Oct 02, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Minor issues aside, UnMetal is an absolute winner. With gut-busting writing and a great mix of retro-inspired stealth action enhanced with modern mechanics, it’s a game that warrants a spot in any classic Metal Gear fan’s collection. Here’s hoping this isn’t the last time we get to take control of Jesse Fox. He may not be the action hero we deserve, but he’s the one we need right now.
Francis DiPersio · Sep 27, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - No amount of fun gameplay and humor can disguise the fact that you’ve had to fight the helicopter boss 400 times because the game made you do some weird choices beforehand that you had no way of knowing the outcome of. Having said all that, this game actually references and corrects the classic “I feel asleep” line from Metal Gear on the NES so it’s clearly a masterpiece.
William Worrall · Sep 27, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - UnMetal is across the board a genuinely fun game. Between the narrative drenched in satirical humour and the action-packed gameplay, there's really not a lot that hampers this experience. Considering UnMetal is also quite the formidable game, taking a good 8-10 hours to blast through, not accounting for the collectibles and secrets that can be discovered along the way. Match all of this up with some pretty solid pixel graphics, and you get a title that is surprisingly one of the better indie games of the year.
Ben Lyons · Oct 13, 2021 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1, Switch, VitaRead full review - With solid gameplay, excellent style and some of the funniest writing I’ve ever encountered in a game, this pastiche to a classic is one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve experienced this year. It would be impressive enough as is, but when you then consider that this is largely the work of just one person, it becomes an almost unbelievable achievement. If you want an old-school adventure with some new-school panache, you’re not going to get much better in 2021 than UnMetal.
Andy Manson · Sep 28, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Miraculously, it’s also tethered to a perfectly fine, surprisingly taut stealth game that would have been solid without the jokes. As it turns out, come for the humour, stay for the surprisingly tight stealth game. War: it’s faaaantasic.

About the game
Trailers & Screenshots:
In 1972 a crack commando squad threw you in prison for a crime you didn't commit. You promptly escaped from a maxumum-security stockade to the underground trying to survive from these soldiers of fortune. UnMetal is a 2D stealth/action game (with a bit of humor) where the goal is to escape from an enemy military base. But what started as a simple break out ended up being an inside operation to prevent a massive attack against the NATO.
