- If you threw a party and invited all of the adventure/roleplaying games along, Unepic would be the one in the center of the room blurting out jokes, laughing too loudly and making sarcastic comments about all of the other guests. Take the time to look past that however and you might learn a little more about what's beneath the surface; a fairly rewarding RPG system and more than a few clever ideas that make for an enjoyable, old-school adventure title that just tries a little too hard.
Conor McMahon · Jan 14, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Unepic is a longer game, not the type you’ll beat in just a weekend. The castle is huge, yet manages to feel diverse with little in the way of filler. The challenge is real, with a few tough bosses in particular, making it especially gratifying as you advance. Achievements and side quests give you optional things to reach for as well.
Trevor Gould · Jan 10, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - UnEpic is just as good as it’s ever been on the PS Vita, making it a very worthy addition to the handheld’s library of quality games.
Rich · Apr 15, 2016 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - In the end, whether or not you enjoy Unepic will depend on whether or not you enjoy reference humour, and if your enjoyment of the exploration outweighs your frustration with the mediocre combat. Depending on which platform you’re buying it, the game costs anywhere between $9 and $15, so if Unepic sounds like something you’d be interested in, you may want to give it a try. Otherwise, this is one quest you’re better off skipping.
Jesse Brown · Apr 14, 2016 Reviewed onRead full review - Unepic is an enjoyable retro style action RPG. It has not gotten the attention or acclaim of some more recent retro style 2D platformers such as Axiom Verge or Shovel Knight, but fans of that style of gameplay should give this one a look. It doesn’t reinvent the Metroidvania style of game, but the developer is obviously a fan of the format and the effort in creating a quality game to pay homage to old school games is apparent.
Chris Shive · Apr 05, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - UnEpic is an RPG/Platformer with some chops, but some questionable design choices and input issues hold it back. The gameplay is solid for fans of Metroidvanias, but does nothing new to distinguish itself in the genre. An irritating take on "Nerd culture" is a turn-off and makes me wonder who this game was supposed to appeal to. To skip dialog press X+O.
Artie · Apr 04, 2016 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Despite its flawed interface, Unepic is a very enjoyable title with a ton of content. There's easily twenty hours of gameplay available and the intricacies of the crafting and customisation options allow for a character perfectly honed to the player's taste. The retro art style and music will not appeal to everyone, but beneath that lies an interesting game with humorous dialogue, for sure.
Josephine Lawton · Jan 18, 2016 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Best for those that let curiosity often get the better of them, Unepic is a game that is well met by those who always wonder what lies waiting for them within the next room. Never holding you by the hand, it is the game’s repetitive visuals that largely detract from its small victories. Whilst it isn’t an experience that successfully strikes a home run, Unepic holds plenty of neat ideas that help to drive you throughout its well-humoured grounding in entirety.
Alex Seedhouse · Mar 03, 2014 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Overall, if you’re looking for a humorous dungeon crawler with a unique feel to the weapons and a unique brand of humor, Unepic serves quite well. There are quite a few boss encounters in the game to keep you entertained and the dialogue and humor are second to none compared to other eShop releases. For RPG fans who have been dying for an experience on the Wii U outside of Monster Hunter, definitely try Unepic.
Ashley King · Feb 13, 2014 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Unepic is an unabashed homage to classic 8-bit adventure and role-playing games. Its sharp wit and bevy of nerd-culture references offset the frustration that arises from an unrelentingly challenging dungeon crawler. Uneven character balance and some exploitable enemy AI limit the ways you can play enjoyably, but there are still rewards to be found in the careful exploration of the sprawling castle.
