  • The challenge isn't a surprise; years of dungeon crawling have built up my tolerance for difficult, slow-paced first-person RPGs. But Unchained Blades' great leveling system and sharp dungeon design clash with its old-school leanings and badly-developed attempts at mixing up the formula. The well-crafted bits could have been built into something special, but they're lost in the shadow of hardcore posturing.

  • I say that to be as transparent as possible and to say that there's a ton of content for genre fanboys to gobble up by the hour, but it can at times feel like Fang and company are grinding back against the player, hoping to put off progression in favor of one more battle. Even the game's soundtrack can achieve soaring highs, but the repetition can suffocate any semblance of fun. I'm not the gamer that'll finish Unchained Blades, but maybe you are.

Luckily, that tutorial time passes and the rest of the adventure settles into the right kind of punishing rhythm that fans of this painfully challenging type of game will definitely enjoy. If that’s not you, steer clear – you’ll just get frustrated here. But if you like a challenge and don’t mind a grind, you may be able to find out if Fang’s stuck-up attitude and selfishness carry him all the way through to getting his revenge.

  • Unchained Blades is unabashedly old-school. Its high level of challenge and grind-heavy pacing won't be for everyone, but it has so much style that anyone intrigued by the story or characters — and open to some difficult dungeon crawling — should definitely check it out.

About the game

Though Fang is already renowned as the ruthless and feared Dragon Emperor, his lust for strength brings him to the doorsteps of the great Goddess Clunea. When he arrogantly demands that she find him a fitting opponent to defeat, the offended creator banishes him to crawl upon the ground in a weakened state. Now Fang must traverse dangerous living temples of the Goddess' creation, known as Titans, in order to meet his maker once again and exact his revenge. But he cannot do it alone...
