  • Overall, Tron: Identity is a solid visual novel that fans of Tron are sure to enjoy. While the weak puzzle elements hold the title back from true greatness, the game provides a fascinating glimpse into one of science fiction’s most beloved settings. I greatly enjoyed my return trip to The Grid, and hope that the existence of Tron: Identity is a sign of more to come.

Tron: Identity is a visual novel adventure following Query, a detective program tasked with uncovering the mystery of what was taken and by whom. You’ll interact with intriguing characters, and decide whether to ally with them, spurn them, or even derezz them on a mission to recover lost memories.

  • It’s a very competent if short visual novel, and it’s engaging in a bite-sized sort of way. I do wish that Disney had thrown some money at it to get voice work, but I’m fine that there’s just ambient electronica and the proper synthesized sinister feel that carries the read text.

  • Tron: Identity flirts with some pretty weighty themes across its concise playtime. Issues of fate, the meaning of memory, and purpose in the face of extinction – all of these and more are explored, primarily in connection with the game’s subtitle: identity. By the end, no matter your choices, the game doesn’t seek to offer any particular conclusive statements on those topics.

  • Tron: Identity is a surprising game that very easily could have fizzled into a boring, forgettable snore-fest, but instead is engaging and fun. As someone who isn’t a fan of visual novels, I have to give Identity credit for being a fun and engrossing adventure.

  • TRON: Identity uses a static illustration approach to its visuals, and they absolutely nail the TRON aesthetic, with an added overlay of moody, noir-ish atmosphere. Likewise, the synth-based soundtrack by Dan le Sac pulses and whirs, and does a good job of supplying some much-needed emotional content.

  • Tron: Identity is a sharply written story that offers not only a fresh look at Tron, but also an interesting visual novel/puzzle hybrid format. The pacing of the story, the agency I feel when making choices, and the immediate weight of those choices make this a fine new addition to the visual novel library--even if the puzzles routinely pull me out of the story for a moment.

  • Tron: Identity is a smart and respectful use of the classic series, turning it into a gripping sci-fi detective story.

  • Tron: Identity won’t wow anyone with its puzzles, but it does a great job of telling a tight story that changes with each playthrough. The short playtime encourages you to explore the world a bit more and uncover new truths that you missed because of your previous actions.

  • It makes great use of its runtime, and playing through it again feels like a reasonable prospect. It tells a complete story but leaves things wide open to continue. In many ways, I love that the focus is entirely on the interior of The Grid and leaves out any human interference. It’s a terrific approach.
