  • Nostalgia for those early games makes any new entry in the genre a difficult proposition and while Toybox Turbos could improve in some areas, it’s as good as we’ve had in many years. If there’s still an audience for four player local multiplayer – and I suspect there really is – then this is a great game for those loud and excitable afternoon or post-pub play sessions.

  • Not that it really matters. Most importantly, Toybox Turbos is great fun in multiplayer. It is a modern game from a beloved, retro-shaped mould and it looks and plays just like the Micro machines games you remember. Truth is, those classics have aged pretty dreadfully, so the fact that this new game is comparable to the rose-tinted image of 20+ years of nostalgia is a massive achievement. One worth jumping up and down about. While spinning around. You know, like the cars do.

  • Toybox Turbos is Micro Machines, and that’s no bad thing. Pull three friends together (online or off) and the classic, fast paced, anarchic fun of elimination mode could last for hours. The game still lacks in single player thrills, but that’s an acceptable caveat now that I can once more get together with mates for a few laps around the breakfast table. Welcome back, Toybox Turbos.

  • It's hard not to see the ways in which this could have been more ambitious, more innovative in the way it dusts off the past, but equally it's hard to blame Codemasters for simply giving Micro Machines fans exactly what they wanted, just how they remembered it. As a budget-priced reminder of simpler times, Toybox Turbos does everything it needed to, but sadly not much more. Here's hoping it leads to a genre revival - and a bolder sequel.

  • Overall Toybox Turbos is a decent little racer. It's very cutesy, and lacking in options, but the younger audience will no doubt enjoy it, and for those among us drawn to it via nostalgia, there's enough to keep us playing for a few hours. It's not quite the racer we wanted it to be, but it still has the potential to be genuinely fun, and that, at the end of the day, is most definitely the point.

  • Toybox Turbos might not have the Micro Machines branding then, but when it nails everything else that those licensed games did so well in the first place, it feels churlish not to look past such superfluous things. Camera issues and a relative lack of ambition aside, this is the new Micro Machines title that you forgot you wanted and quite honestly, it’s just great to see this type of game again in 2014.

  • Toybox Turbos is one of the finest couch-based multiplayer packages in recent times; a well-realised love letter, both to the game’s Micro Machine-based heritage and the joy of playing games with friends.
