- Top Spin 3 isn't quite the definitive tennis game the developers were hoping to create. The lack of notable stars, the flat atmosphere, and the by-the-numbers career mode are disappointments. Yet, for better or worse, it's the control scheme that ultimately defines Top Spin 3. Once acclimated, you'll find that it brings you closer to the on-court action than any tennis game before it, but it’s also unforgiving.
Game Trailers · Jul 31, 2008 Reviewed on X360 - The control scheme’s simple hold-and-release button press mechanic belies its depth, and while there’s a steep learning curve that makes the game somewhat inaccessible to newcomers, it’s worth sticking to. The game is beautiful to look at, and it provides a fantastic simulation of tennis. If you’re a fan of the sport at all, and you’re willing to work at the controls, Top Spin 3 is definitely worth a purchase.
Samit Sarkar · Jul 10, 2008 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - If you're looking for a deep, challenging experience, this should keep you busy for some time to come; but if you prefer the occasional arcade match, or like the variety of minigames that some of Top Spin's competitors offer, you'll want to look elsewhere. Despite a few minor complaints the game looks and sounds great, and it feels almost as authentic as having front-row seats to a real-life grand slam.
Luke Anderson · Jul 01, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Top Spin 3 knows its market - this is a game aimed at tennis buffs who appreciate a simulation approach to their favorite sport. Like all realistic takes, there's a steep learning curve (thanks to the game's controls) that will probably frustrate more gamers than win over new converts. Virtua Tennis fans need not apply; this is tennis done more accurately...for better or worse. The game may not serve up an ace, but it makes for a solid set.
Jason Lauritzen · Jun 23, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - One day there will be tennis game that can accurately convey the emotion of watching two titans of the sport slam it out in a five-set, four and a half-hour marathon under the New York lights, but until that happens tennis games will never be wholly representative of the genuine article.
Nate Ahearn · Jun 23, 2008 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - It's got depth to the gameplay that will take a fair amount of time to master and solid online play, but outside of the controls developer PAM hasn't tried to do anything unique. The career mode is a little too basic and the lack of mini-games is a disappointment. Top Spin 3 is by far the best tennis sim on the market, but there's still plenty of room for improvement.
Tom Orry · Jun 20, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Yes, the often exhausting depth might prove to be off-putting for those who prefer the more intuitive Virtua Tennis, but that's precisely part of Top Spin 3's more simulation-minded appeal. With fantastic online play and an obsessive career mode to dive into, it's the thinking man's tennis title.
Kristan Reed · Jun 25, 2008 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Ultimately, despite its flaws and disappointments, Top Spin 3 nonetheless managers to offer up a realistic tennis experience applicable to both die-hard and casual fans of the genre alike. Though newcomers may be put off by the steep learning curve, they’ll find that if they put enough time into it, the game can be a very rewarding experience.
