  • Visually, Tools Up! has a cartoonish vibe, with characters dressed in overalls and hardhats looking like Bob the Builder wannabes. The houses are primarily blocky, with carpet, floorboards and tiles laid in a grid. Both the floor and walls that require renovation will be highlighted when hovered over, as are the hardware items.

  • While what is included in Tools Up is fun, it feels like there is so much more the development team can do to create new levels with the already present themes and create new themes for even more levels. It’s not often I say this, but I really hope there is some upcoming DLC, or a sequel is coming quickly.

  • The bugs I encountered while playing just compound the issue – which is a shame, as there’s some enjoyment to be had with the right co-op partners. That said, I’ll be on the lookout for updates and any future DLC that might add some new environments or different mechanics to the game. Something to spice up Tools Up! would go a really long way.

  • While Tools Up! definitely has some negative points when looking at the single-player aspect or the overall controls, the game is a fun party experience. With a few patches and polishing this could just as well be a competitor for games such as Overcooked and Catastronauts. We know we compared the game to these two titles a lot, but in our humble opinion, they have become a bit of the benchmark for games such as this. If you like the other games we mentioned, but want to play at a more leisurely pace, then Tools Up! might be a great game to learn the ropes of its hectic siblings.

  • With a similar cadence of chaos and a better-tuned scoring system, Tools Up is, without question, a game co-op party gamers will enjoy. It's just not the one you'd want to start with in what is fast becoming a crowded genre. Tools Up successfully reimagines the games that inspired it in the most front-facing, important ways, even as it doesn't manage to bring quite all of the tools for the job.

  • The actual act of playing Tools Up – while very simplistic – is enjoyable in the moment, and it's particularity well-suited to families with a range of video game expertise. But it's hard not to want more unique challenges, either with physical obstacles or more creatively demanding interior designs. Tools Up doesn't make the most of its clever co-op gaming concept, but I still had a decent enough time. I'll be there day one if a sequel ever takes this home-renovation hook and runs wild with it.

  • Tools Up! is off to a decent start here with simple, fun gameplay. Lack of online multiplayer really puts a limit on how much fun can be had however. But grab some mates and a you’re in for a fun – though rowdy – evening of construction together.

  • What a delight Tools Up! is — games that feature home renovations are more often fun than not, and this charming little title takes it up a notch by adding the co-op mechanic. Players will easily find themselves getting lost in the gameplay, trying to clear one more round in a way that mimics a bad case of Civilization’s “one-more-turn-itis”. If Overcooked was your thing, you have a group of friends who are always looking for a new challenge, or you simply love throwing paint on the walls and hoping for the best, Tools Up! is a wonderful gem that definitely belongs in your library (or maybe in your kitchen, or your living room, or…).

  • Tools Up! Garden Party doesn’t really do much to advance the repetitive gameplay of the original, or remedy any of its issues. However, it’s a generous package for the price, despite being the same game with a different skin on.

  • Although I did have a lot of fun while playing Tools Up! during the moment, I found myself wanting more from it upon reflection. It is a fun game, but the only challenge comes from timing, essentially. I can see why there would be more chaos with more players, as that would require more co-operation, but… It just felt like it was missing that little something. Where Overcooked’s levels add layer upon layer of complexity, with moving platforms and complicated dishes and impassable barriers that force you into having to perfect your co-ordination, Tools Up! just doesn’t quite do that.
