Threes is a brilliant puzzle game that can pass spare minutes, hours, or pretty much however long you’ve got. Its simple matching mechanics take only moments to learn, but training yourself to see several moves ahead while anticipating the possible variables is a challenge that’s gripped the puzzle center of my brain as tightly as classics like Tetris ever did. An unexpected element of outstanding music and personality makes every game a pleasure, even if my scores can’t top the leaderboard.

  • Reviewing Threes! has been one of the few games, admittedly, I’ve been addicted to. Its simple pick to play, and a lifetime to master mechanic coupled with a charming presentation makes Threes! a class of its own. If you enjoy puzzle games or just games in general, you owe it to yourself to pick this gem up.

  • You’ll be hard pressed to let that bother you too much, though, as at the end of the day Threes! is pick up and play perfection. It may not shatter your perceptions of what a puzzle game is, but it will remind you just how great they can be.

  • Some may find that the music becomes annoying after a while, and that may be a valid complaint, but if that is the worst thing that can be said about Threes! I am sure anyone will live with that. The game does cost $1.99, but the forced lack of ads is actually very refreshing and Threes! definitely takes the crown as my new favorite game. Its personality, addictive gameplay, and dead-on touch controls make this one of the best games of the year.

  • After spending 20+ hours with it, I’m happy with my score – but I glance at the worldwide leaderboards and realize I’m not ready to stop playing yet. The game rewards strategy and patience time and time again, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not having it on your iOS devices.

  • Threes is a great mix of simplicity, style and fun. Even if you hate math and numbers, you’ll dig this. I was really surprised by how many times I kept coming back to Threes. Each time I played, I got better and better at strategically planning where to slide my tiles. And even if I messed up, I didn’t care. I knew I could dive right back in and try again. Slide over Tetris, I’ve got a new puzzle game to try and master.

  • The simple mechanics, deep strategy, and stacks of charm are balanced so perfectly together that it’s impossible to imagine a single change that could really improve upon what Sirvo has created. It is, as Karate Kid-inspired ThreeJay would say, “the best around.”

  • There’s plenty of challenge, and when the game ends, it’s hard to resist the urge to hit restart and try just one more time for a higher score. Threes may be “a tiny game about matching numbers,” but it’s got a lot of fun hiding in its simple grid.

Threes is uncommonly sweet, though it can feel a little insubstantial. Even given that each new game can throw up fresh challenges, its single mode means there’s not quite enough variety to hold the attention over longer play sessions. ...At the same time, its combination of charm and craft will keep tempting you back for another shot; all but the most demanding of puzzle fans will surely find a permanent slot on their home screen for a game as laid-back and likeable as this.

  • In the end, here's Threes! in three sentences: Threes! is about as close as it gets to a perfect mobile game. Threes! is a game you need on every iOS device you own. Threes! is a game you need to tell your iPhone owning non-gamer-but-plays-some-games friends about.
