- Despite its disappointing combat system and its missed opportunity for providing a more engaging story, Thea: The Awakening still manages to be a riveting game that’ll keep you hooked for hours. There’s a lot to the adventuring component, and the challenges are fun. Don’t expect much hand-holding, but expect the challenge to be enjoyable and tense.
Stan Cohen · Feb 15, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - With a game that employs multiple means of victory through strategy, great focus on Slavic mythology and a beautiful map peppered with resources, bodies of water and forests, Thea: The Awakening will really surprise you. For fans of simulation titles with a sweet mix of RPG elements, Thea is an easy recommendation as there is very little on the Switch that even compares in the genre.
Thi Chao · Feb 15, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The complexity leads to all sorts of different ways you can enjoy your time but also creates a gigantic barrier to entry. Without watching a YouTube video of a playthrough being completed and explained on the fly I may have just given up, which would have been a shame because Thea is a fantastic title worth spending the time to figure out.
David Lloyd · Feb 01, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The main reasons I would suggest for playing this game would be to see the unique mashup of genres, which is admittedly refreshing, and to experience a sort of trance-like state where you passively play as you tick your time away. Thea combines 4X, Card Games, crafting, and more to make an interesting beast that ultimately struggles to carry its own weight despite novelty.
ThatGamersAsylum · Jun 28, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - How much you enjoy Thea: The Awakening will depend on your ability to tolerate micromanagement and the frustration of random events that can torpedo your success. There is a lot to do in the game, but it’s questionable if all that busyness adds up to a satisfying experience.
Mark Steighner · Dec 22, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Slavic mythology, card minigames, and hexagonal turn-based strategic gameplay are just the beginnings to what Thea: The Awakening has to offer. With such a high replay value, it’ll keep you entertained and busy for much more than you would expect. It definitely packs a big punch for an ‘under the radar’ game, and should definitely be on the wishlists of those who fancy strategy, resource management-based games.
Judi Azmand · Nov 26, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Never mind the fact that Thea: The Awakening can frequently feel like a needlessly complicated 4X stategy/survival rogue-like/card battler. If that was its only issue, this would be an easy recommendation. Regrettably, the inconvenience that is its user interface mars what could be something really awesome.
Ofisil · Mar 07, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Thea: The Awakening wants to be many things. It wants to be a proper 4X game; it wants to be a through-and-through survival experience; it wants to be an RPG, a CCG and many other genres all at once. It succeeds at some, but often at the expense of others. There are some really great ideas here – the almost Pratchett-esque silliness to some of its scenarios and the focus on Slavic myths serves as a striking source of inspiration – but the focus on micro-management busywork simply gets in the way of the empire-building fun Thea should really be embracing.
Dom Reseigh-Lincoln · Feb 02, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Thea: The Awakening brings some new interesting ideas to the survival strategy genre, raising a curiosity for any player that is already a fan of this group but also encourages players that are new to this type of game since they have more of a variety available with some fun and exciting new aspects that can be considered. I would happily recommend this game and will be revisiting it myself in the near future.
Damien Griffiths · Oct 11, 2016 Reviewed on PC - All in all, Thea is a game that has interesting ideas, but none of them play out in a fun or interesting way. The most attractive aspect is probably its lore, which still feels bland and shallow. No story is thought-provoking; no character is memorable, and if it is, it’s due to how obnoxious they can be. I can’t recommend Thea, and given the particular aversion towards card videogames that our editor has, that may even be an understatement.

About the game
Trailers & Screenshots:
Thea: The Awakening is a turn-based strategic survival game steeped in Slavic myth and monstrosity set after an apocalyptic force known only as The Darkness has engulfed the world. There are Strigas and Baba Yagas aplenty, but there are no heroes, no monster slayers, and no great armies capable of banishing them. You have only a few hopeless and starving survivors who are desperately trying to stay alive. You are their last and only true hope!
