  • There’s also the inevitable hit to the game’s visuals – which were never stunning, but the way they’ve been simplified here can often detract significantly from the spectacle. Performance wise it works as it should, but perhaps only consider this Switch port if you have no alternative format to choose from.

  • It is a nearly hopeless dystopia in a time where hope is at a premium in our lives. It's not the best choice, it's Spacer's Choice. Still, if you haven't checked out The Outer Worlds yet and have enjoyed Obsidian's previous work, you're very likely to find yourself as compelled as I was to play all the way to the end, despite the unfortunate timing and graphical limitations of the Switch version.

  • At the end of the day, The Outer Worlds succeeds in being a story-driven RPG that offers a lot of freedom for you to experience and play the game as you see fit. It doesn't look particularly good or run incredibly well. I don't want to downplay the importance of the story and quests, but The Outer Worlds feels like either a calculated cash grab or a team obsessed with making a game run on an inferior system for the sake of it, rather than trying to find a new player base.

  • I really want to recommend The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch. I’ve seen some developers do a great job bringing triple-A titles over and I had high hopes for Obsidians’ Sci-Fi RPG. However, after spending a week pushing through pretty rough gameplay experience, it’s clear that this port just doesn’t cut it. Too many sacrifices were made to make it run and it shows. Should you play The Outer Worlds? Definitely. Should you play it on the Nintendo Switch? only if you have no other option.

  • So, now we come to the big question: is The Outer Worlds worth getting on the Nintendo Switch? I would recommend that to get the most out of the game in all areas, you should play it on another platform. The compromises of the Switch version can take away from a lot of the visual beauty and wonder, which is a big part of any game - I mean, you’re looking at the screen all the time.

  • Is this the best version of The Outer Worlds out there? No. Should this be the version for you to consider purchasing in case you have never played this game before? Absofreakinglutely not. Is is still a fantastic RPG with one of the best plots and characters in recent memory? Without a shadow of a doubt. The Switch version of The Outer Worlds is visually disappointing, but the visuals don’t tarnish what this game does best: entertain you for hours and hours.

  • The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch is the final straw for me. My heart can’t take the disappointment of these ports anymore. Time and time again, a port of an otherwise excellent game is released on the Switch (at full price, mind you) only to be a shell of the developer’s original vision. I get it, there’s money to be made, and there will always be that dedicated group of fans that can’t be told no, and will argue these games don’t look the way they do.

  • Virtuos has made the expected tweaks to graphics in order to keep things as smooth as possible with this Switch port and, although things can look and feel a little rough in docked mode, in handheld this is a supremely enjoyable experience that's entertained us just as much this time around as when we played it at launch, and comes highly recommended to fans of the genre.

  • Ironically, after infusing its latest RPG with much more color than the drab Fallout New Vegas, The Outer Worlds on Switch ends up looking quite dreary itself, which isn't out of place in such a dystopia. Still, since the world is always presented with tongue firmly in cheek, the colors make more sense for the world and are thus disappointingly absent on Switch.

  • The Outer Worlds for the Nintendo Switch is an admirable, yet mediocre port of an otherwise great game – end of story. It runs well enough to justify its existence, but at the current asking price you’re better off playing Obsidian’s latest elsewhere.

About the game

In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
