- With one foot in the past and one in the present, it brings together all the best aspects of the original, and adds modern flourishes to give us a near-perfect game. Add in infinite replayability, as well as several different play modes, and this game is an absolute must-have for anybody who grew up with the original.
Daymon Trapold · Dec 28, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Oregon Trail is still a simple, 2D adventure RPG, but the new graphics split the difference between the original’s primitive art and a modern game. The result is a colorful presentation with lots of personalities that looks like a pixel-art indie project from 2022. The Oregon Trail has never been about complex controls or mechanics.
Mark Steighner · Nov 24, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - This isn’t just a new version of a game, this is the updated version that actually caters to what gaming personalities expect and look for in new titles. Sure, there’s no touchscreen controls, which is a bizarre choice for something that was just on a goddamn touchscreen device,
Oliver Shellding · Nov 17, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Oregon Trail comes with radiant visuals that are cartoonish but – at the same time – can be incredibly beautiful with some amazing landscapes. This is especially true in the night times scenes in the wilderness and the lighting effects in the day. On the whole though, it comes together with a very family-friendly feel, even when considering the terrors that you may happen across.
Gareth Brierley · Sep 10, 2023 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - The Oregon Trail is a good example of how to execute side quests that lengthen and enliven our gaming experience. In many of our attempts we have different encounters with characters who will ask us for help in their own undertakings. It is important to appreciate that if we use our precious resources to help them, they in turn can make our lives easier on future journeys.
Eduardo Corrochano · Nov 24, 2022 Reviewed on PC, SwitchRead full review - Whether you’re shooting wildlife, caravaning across a perilous river, or playing doctor with your crew, you’ll find that this life-management sim provides hours of entertainment, with a constant push to go further, see more, and explore the wild yonder. Adding a new graphical sheen to a game that began as a text adventure is a welcome addition, and seeing the Trail again at its best is enough to trick my nostalgic memory to think that it looks just the same as when I sat down to play it during class, and that’s a ticket I would buy again and again. While The Oregon Trail may not be for everyone and it doesn’t add too much to make it the best game it could be, it’s a great title to play when you’re looking for adventure, or peril to overcome.
Bryan Taylor · Apr 07, 2021 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - It’s a faithful recreation of one of the all-time classics in gaming, made fresh and original, and highly enjoyable. Even as a partial educational venture for young gamers, there is a lot to enjoy and experience here. Definitely worth a look.
