  • This newest update of The Mortuary Assistant is the best way to explore this narrative and we quite enjoyed it. The scares are top-notch, and the gameplay managed to keep us engaged enough without getting annoying due to the short runtime of a playthrough. Overall, a night well spent.

  • The Mortuary Assistant is far removed from the usual horror fare – and that should be applauded. The sim elements mixed with horror scares and a great story help, but you may find the controls and menus annoying; they certainly dampened my enthusiasm for the game a tad. But if you want to find out what all the streamers have been screaming about, then give The Mortuary Assistant a go.

  • The Mortuary Assistant is a very well-crafted horror game. The gameplay is surprisingly addictive and its use of sound and randomized scares make it a nerve-wracking experience to play. A few confusing tutorials and clunky story moments aside, this is a horror game that does a lot of things right. It’s a tense time that will have you looking around every corner hoping and praying that the next thing you see won’t be the last.

  • Providing some high quality scares and morbidly curious gameplay, The Mortuary Assistant is a good horror game held back by an undercooked port to consoles that can create more frustration than fun.

  • Not since P.T. has PlayStation seen such an effective single location horror experience. With its simple setup, looping story, and inventive scares, Mortuary Assistant is borderline essential for genre fans.

  • The Mortuary Assistant finally reaches home consoles, offering up a unique and tense work-horror scenario. Unfortunately, the controls implemented in this port hold back the console version a great deal. Inputs don't respond the way they should, and navigating menus proves cumbersome on practically all fronts. It's a game horror fans should check out, but maybe not on console.

  • In the end, The Mortuary Assistant is a standout title in the horror genre. It excels at creating a genuinely frightening atmosphere and integrates its horror elements seamlessly into the gameplay. While the graphics aren’t revolutionary, the game’s strength lies in its sound design and its ability to deliver unpredictable scares.

  • Horror fans are likely to appreciate the brilliant premise of The Mortuary Assistant, and will enjoy the fact it's genuinely creepy and unpredictable. Preparing bodies is surprisingly engaging, and there are multiple endings to discover which will keep players returning for more, but unfortunately the PS5 version is very rough around the edges.

  • The Mortuary Assistant's console re-release is the perfect excuse to dive into what's genuinely one of the scariest horror games in recent years.

    About the game

Having completed your degree in mortuary sciences, you have taken on an apprenticeship at River Fields Mortuary. Over the past several months you have logged many hours aiding the Mortician in daily tasks along with learning the ins and outs of the embalming process as well as how to properly handle and care for the deceased. Late one night, you are called into work to handle some embalmings. Death doesn’t keep day time hours. But there is something different about these bodies because there is something different about you. The phone rings with the Mortician on the other end. The rumors are true, and you can not leave.
