  • It’s enjoyable trying multiple different strategies and working out what method pays off the best. The fact that you feel almost solely restricted by your imagination is an even bigger advantage. It really is the kind of game you’ll wonder why no one has done before.

  • The Escapists holds the methodical tedium of a prison life simulator with some escape mechanics built in, rather than a thrilling game in which you plan your escape. More focus on teaching the intricacies of the mechanics in-game would have done wonders for The Escapists and actually hatching and carrying out a master plan for escaping confinement, because at its core The Escapists is a thrilling concept.

  • The Escapists is a quite challenging game with some great ideas scattered throughout, but sometimes feels lacking in execution. ...However, the game is greatly held back by how parts of the game require too much trial and error, though it feels incredibly rewarding to make the right item or grand escape after much troubleshooting. The Escapists overall is a unique game that is great for those looking for a challenge, but may be a little too tedious for the general gamer.

  • The Escapists works on a simple premise and gives the full package to make it work. Sure, there’s basically no storyline and the characters say not much more than few lines of dialogue, but in a game so focused around the mechanics, the storytelling is surely not a primary concern.

  • ...Players require a certain kind of grit to take on the numerous setbacks, but finally escaping can be an exhilarating experience. Although I lack that kind of perseverance when it comes to games, I won't hold it against The Escapists for requiring it. However, I do wish that you could do something unexpected to help break up the monotony, like start a prison riot. Or form dance troupe with your fellow inmates.

As a mix of sandbox, puzzle and open-world action, The Escapists offers something fresh and entertaining. It’s a clever game that’s not afraid to be challenging, and a very enjoyable puzzle if you don’t mind it also being a touch vague, often repetitive, and happy to quickly get as hard as figuring out an actual prison break.

  • The Escapists implores you to dig deep for your strategy, but it doesn't offer enough excitement along the way. The concept is sound; I just wish I had more fun. I like the idea of The Escapists better than the game it actually is. Escaping prison should be more exciting than this. Strategizing is fun, but the amount of repetition gets tiresome.

  • I doubt I’ll go back to the game or try to escape again. With its truncated clock system, The Escapists balances two opposing forces against the player’s own patience with notable mechanical leverage no matter where you’re coming from.

  • Despite its foibles, The Escapists is a gratifying game that provides dozens of hours of entertainment. Planning an escape and watching it unfold is endlessly satisfying, and a successful breakout leaves you feeling jubilant. Even after you master the game's six prisons, there are three extras waiting to be challenged.

  • I feel the pace should be simmered down slightly to pair better with the controls, and having a more informed crafting system would allow players to remain in the game rather than shifting back and forth from a wiki page. Otherwise it is an experience full of variety due to the complexity of each prison, and a challenge to escape that demands your time and instills pressure.

    About the game

You may not be in an open prison, but you are in an open world where in between attending rollcalls, mealtimes and doing your chores you should grab every chance to plan your escape. Do you do favours for other inmates earning money and boosting their opinion of you along the way? Or workout and become stronger? Read to increase your skills or spend your time crafting items into homemade weapons and tools. What about working diligently in your prison job, to gain promotions to new jobs with better benefits? Keep a low profile or go out all guns blazing, as long as you escape in the end, that
