  • The Deer God had me saying “Oh Deer.” A game this artistically beautiful shouldn’t be so lifeless and outside of its opening moments I really can’t think of many redeemable segments of the game. It’s slow, repetitive and has no clear direction for where it wants to go or what it wants to be. Not only is it not worth your money, it’s certainly unworthy of your time.

  • Negativity aside, as I mentioned, it’s a beautiful game. The light from the sun breaking across a plain as you leap from rock to rock in a stunning 3D rendition of pixel art can be quite moving. And the music, too, is appropriately haunting and melodic, capturing the aesthetic in audio form. But there’s far too much wrong here for me to recommend The Deer God.

  • So at the end of this unfortunate experience, I will once again underline: The Deer God is art. But who cares? No message about the fragility and cruelty of nature will resonate in your game if it’s unsatisfying and shallow. Certainly not on the eShop which is packed with a glut of excellent platformers as it is.

  • With all of this in mind, is The Deer God worth picking up on the Nintendo Switch? It is certainly a well-designed title that does provide enjoyable gameplay. Its tranquil aesthetic and procedurally-generated world make it a relaxing adventure to keep returning to. If you can look beyond the narrative or if you happen to share the game’s perspective, it’s a pretty neat romp and makes for a great portable title.

  • The Deer God is a tough sell, its visuals and music can’t help make this game any less frustrating. If you have a lot of time and more importantly a lot of patience maybe this game is good for you, but as it stands, I would stay clear.

  • Set in pretty landscapes with a storyline full of theoretical potential, The Deer God had us highly intrigued during the first few moments of the game. Unfortunately, though, this instantly faded away and never returned; the repetitive nature of the core gameplay, which mostly consists of just running to the right over the same platforms, meant that we lost all interest in discovering the answers to its philosophical questions.

  • The Deer God may be a beautiful game, but behind its majestic facade lies a dull platformer that fails to challenge. All of the your adversaries are easily bypassed, and the lack of engaging stories or missions leaves this game as one of the worst things to come out of the forest since stinging nettles.

  • The Deer God features top-notch retro graphics, bundled with great sound effects, makes for a true gem in video gaming. From the get-go, you can choose Normal Mode or if you’re a platformer expert, Hardcore Mode. Gameplay brings a serious challenge. The thing about The Deer God is flawed in many ways. There are still collision detection bugs, which may get you stuck. The control layout poses a problem in normal combat. Killing ugly animals doesn’t hurt your karma, but killing cute ones does.

  • The Deer God is beautiful. Sadly, that beauty is only skin deep. Poor design choices take away from fantastic visuals that really have to be seen. With the right level of polish, this could have been one of our favourite indie games on Wii U. Instead, clumsy quest design, repetitive environments and poor performance ensure The Deer God will be remembered as little more than eye candy.

  • The Deer God is a game that successfully sets itself apart from other games in its genre but is still bound (a bit tightly) to the parameters of what it is. In other words The Deer God fails to transcend the level of enjoyment one would receive from any of the handful of genuinely innovative Android indies, which is what I believe The Deer God aspires to but falls short of being. Don’t consider it an existential crisis but an existential exploration of 2D adventurism with enough entertainment and intrigue for me to endorse its…existence.
