Darwin Project is a battle royale that doesn’t properly reward the time you put into it, lacking in both incentives to keep playing and variety when you do. It definitely has a few clever new ideas and combat that’s fun, if repetitive – but that’s about it. As it stands now, without a Battle Pass to reward playtime, actual loot to make scavenging more exciting, or additional modes and maps to mix things up, it’s hard to recommend over the competition.

  • There’s nothing like that in Darwin Project, which has you performing and working towards the end from the first moment you spawn. The game accomplishes the same tense atmosphere of the best of battle royale while still trying something new, learning from Fortnite and the rest without outright cloning them. Darwin Project isn’t an also-ran, it’s a trendsetter, and anyone still interesting in dropping in hot should take notice.

  • The Darwin Project is far from a bad game, and in fact has reviewed well since its early access days – there’s just not enough of it to get really excited about. In months to come it may well be fleshed out into a more fulfilling experience, but for now it’s very much struggling to be seen in an increasingly busy genre.

  • All in all, Darwin Project on Xbox One is a delightfully charming Battle Royale genre mashup with a distinct Canadian flavor (or should I say flavour). The director adds a level of engagement not found in any other game in the genre, and the tone is whimsically sadistic. That said, there are a few growing pains that have mostly been addressed, and the monetization is not perfect, but overall this is an incredibly fun game and comes easily recommended.

  • Needless to say, I lost, and teaming is frowned up at best in solo queues. We also had some issues at the game’s launch like freezes and connectivity issues, which can hopefully be put down to early teething problems. There were some issues though these could have launch problems. These included the game freezing and some connectivity issues.

    About the game

The Darwin Project takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic landscape in the Northern Canadian Rockies. As preparation for an impending Ice Age, a new project, half science experiment half live-entertainment, is launched. It's called "The Darwin Project" and it challenges participants to survive the cold and fight to the death in a treacherous arena. The Darwin Project offers a competitive multiplayer third person survival experience featuring at its core a new gameplay innovation: the manhunt. In his or her path to victory, a player must survive extreme environmental conditions, track opponents, and set traps in order to win.
