- And sure, this isn’t Double Fine’s best effort, yet it remains more interesting and charismatic than most puzzle-adventure games that pop-up on the app store, regularly. Making it worth every beat of your adventurous heart… assuming your heart is as big as mine.
Jeffrey deMelo · Oct 09, 2013 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - At its core, The Cave could have been a compelling return to a genre that had been long dormant. Unfortunately the execution on this promise was far more subpar than its potential subject matter. With a control patch there is still a chance that the title could be redeemed, but in its current state it isn’t worth the unnecessary irritation that it will undoubtedly cause.
Blake Grundman · Oct 07, 2013 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - I can forgive the little issues, though, because of what all is done obviously right: engaging NPCs who both help and hinder the tasks of each puzzle, the stylized world, the voice-overs of both the NPCs and the Cave itself, and the $15 price point. The voice-overs and plays on words, especially in the Time-Traveler's section, had me laughing out loud, and the voices themselves are surprisingly fitting. A single playthrough might not be very long, but be prepared to keep playing… you're gonna. And you'll enjoy it!
Kevin Schaller · Feb 08, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Still, don’t get the impression this game is without merit. Quite the contrary, in fact; the first time your stomach drops because you realize you have committed terrible acts is an amazing experience. I just can’t guarantee that you’ll tolerate the routine annoyances that separate them. If you’re the type of gamer that likes talking about games as much as playing them, The Cave will give you plenty to talk about. Otherwise, if you’re just after a fun and well-crafted experience, there’s too much chaff in this package.
Lawrence Sonntag · Feb 05, 2013 Reviewed on X360 - At the end of the day The Cave is what it is; a graphic adventure game that has witty humor, and if that's your thing then you'll find it an enjoyable romp. The demo is free to try out for those who never tried the genre before or are afraid of the bugs. If you are a fan of Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island type games, namely a focus on dialogue and story rather than action, then this is a game you will enjoy.
Dane Smith · Feb 04, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - The Cave's offbeat sense of humor is mostly charming, and actually solving the puzzles inside it feels delightfully difficult. However, the severely diminishing returns on its replay value make it more of a momentarily amusing distraction than something you'll be holding onto for years to come.
Ma'idah Lashani · Feb 02, 2013 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360, Wii URead full review - The Cave isn't bad, but it is mystifyingly bland for what it sets out to be – and that ends up being worse than a glorious failure. We need more games like this, with this much love on display. With its actual adventure bits lacking the spark of its concept and artistry though, The Cave ends up sending you on an ill-fated trudge through platform purgatory in more ways than one.
Richard Cobbett · Jan 30, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Stripped of the excitement of finding new places and exploring them on those second and third runs through, The Cave is just an exercise in repositioning slow-moving characters. It has its high points, like a beautiful art direction and some smart dialog moments, but they’re not enough to offset so much spelunking tedium.
Phil Hornshaw · Jan 29, 2013 Reviewed on PC - The Cave may not be enough to restore adventure games to their former glory, but its clever storytelling, even smarter puzzles, and enchanting art style make it an escapade absolutely worth taking. Despite the occasionally tedious platforming, this is a satisfying experience – and one that you won't forget in a hurry.
Simon Thornton · Jan 27, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Despite its flaws, The Cave is a unique experience that explores a genre that few other games on the market dare to touch. Its cartoony atmosphere and characters mesh perfectly with the somewhat dark humor of the admittedly sparse story. The ability to choose completely different characters with completely different abilities for each playthrough compels you to play multiple times, regardless of the frustrating difficulty.
