  • A provocative and technical feat, Terra Nil stands out from games with a similar environmental setting. It requires you to think creatively and intelligently about the challenges faced by the natural world, and it leaves you with a realistic vision of what humanity needs to do to change the world for the better.

  • Despite its technical flaws and short gameplay, we found ourselves unable to put down Terra Nil on Switch. The simple act of rebuilding a broken and polluted world is so satisfying and well-crafted. From the moment you put down your first wind turbine to watching your airship remove any evidence of your hard work, the game gives you a sense of hope for our own climate crisis without needing to explicitly say a word. This is pure relaxation in video game form and is worth picking up, particularly once that promised first patch is rolled out.

  • Terra Nil is a strategy game where our aim is to convert a barren wasteland into a beautiful landscape, establish an ecosystem, and then leave. It’s a bit like playing SimCity, but in reverse because the goal is to build forests and rivers instead of a town.

  • The game has plenty of positive sides such as the music and graphics. It features lively, slightly cartoon-ish graphics, smooth and flowing. The music is pleasant but same-y and not very expressive, allowing you to play meditatively as you relax. Weather conditions, movement of water and plants, animals – the game features it all and more with a good, modest level of detail.

  • In focusing on environmental expansion instead of human expansion, Terra Nil delivers something wholly unique. While the peaceful nature and serene tone are sometimes interrupted by uneven mechanics, Terra Nil is a worthwhile experience for those looking for a new twist on the sim genre.

Terra Nil’s approach to take that very real fear of the worst environmental disaster but instead of continually stoking the flames of that fear they present you with the tools of opportunity of recovering from the brink, in a word showing that there is hope for a better tomorrow.

  • Terra Nil offers some replayability, in additional levels and challenges, though seeing the credits roll can happen fairly quickly if you’re on a roll. The final coda to your clean-up campaign is touching, though, and puts a sweet bow on the efforts you’ve made.

  • The relaxing background soundtrack sets the tone perfectly, as players slowly progress through each procedurally generated scenario at your own pace. And then, when all is complete and life has been restored to these once-toxic wastelands, it is enjoyable to sit back and take in what you have achieved, watching as parrots fly over rainforest canopies, Manta Rays glide effortlessly through the tropical, coral-filled oceans, or Elk trample through the snowy terrain.

  • In its current state, Terra Nil is excellent, but it is held back by some bugs and glitches that required me to to replay specific portions of levels. It has a solid base for sure, and I look forward to playing it on and off over the coming weeks and months once patches arrive.

  • Terra Nil is a masterclass in everything that it attempts to be. A resource management sim that can be as difficult or relaxing as you want, that successfully provides an alternative to classic city-building games by completely flipping the core pillars of the genre on its head, and showing that a game about fostering nature can be just as engaging as one about destroying it. The game does an amazing job of evoking emotion in the player with just its environment alone and even allows you a moment to relish in the majesty of each region you have restored before heading on to the next. Terra Nil wants you to find love and beauty in nature, even if you have to leave it behind. Endlessly satisfying and elegant, any fans of city builders should give this outstanding take on the genre a try.

About the game

Terra Nil is a game about transforming a barren, lifeless landscape into a thriving, vibrant ecosystem. Turn dead soil into fertile grassland, clean polluted oceans, plant sprawling forests, and create the ideal habitat for animals to call home. Then recycle your buildings and leave no trace that you were there. Reclaim the wasteland.
