  • Look, if you own a PlayStation 4, then you owe it to yourself to give Tearaway Unfolded a shot. If you already played the original on the Vita, then this remake does more than enough to bring you back for a second round. If you haven't then you're missing out on an impressively creative game, one that seems to have decided right from the start that it wants to celebrate everything there is to offer and successfully manages to do so with almost no hitches. Tearaway Unfolded is a game I'll continue to look back on fondly for years to come.

It’s not just a port, it’s a re-imagined version for the console and that means even fans of the original have incentive to check it out again. Otherwise, being on PS4, there is no excuse for players not to dive into the world of Tearaway Unfolded. It might not be the hardest, longest, or most in-depth platforming game, but Tearaway is one world I can’t help but want to revisit repeatedly, each time with a smile on my face.

  • What Tearaway has in abundance is a sense of wonder. Traveling through its papery world continually presents exciting new areas and mechanics. You’ll cross over platforms that extend and retract in the breeze, enter a lively tavern packed with detail, and fly on a paper airplane over an impressive stormy sea. Even when you think you’ve seen it all, the game has a way of greeting you with new surprises, and the PS4 version has even more levels and areas to explore than the Vita original.

  • Of course, Tearaway isn’t without its faults. The combat is shallow and gets tedious near the end of the game, the story drags in parts and could have benefited from being an hour or two shorter, but Tearaway is such a rare type that those things are easily forgiven. It joins the mediums of video game and art together, then flips them topsy turvy until you’re unsure of where one begins and the other ends. And it does this with enough heart to warm even the iciest of cynics.

  • You’ll find plenty of joy in Unfolded’s gorgeous world, arts and craft, and fun gameplay. It’s also the first game to realize the full potential of the DualShock 4. But the poor camera, lackluster new levels and story beats, and overall larger size of Unfolded makes it a lesser experience than it is on the Vita. It’s a semi-remake that fails to match all the charm of the original.

  • Considering what's gone into the conversion from Vita to PS4, Unfolded ranks as one of the best remasters released, exhibiting a clear sense of love of the property that simply isn't seen when many older games arrive on new systems. This is a lovely game, full of the kind of innovation, style, whimsy and care I'd usually associate with Nintendo's mainline titles. It absolutely deserves to be bought and enjoyed.

  • Thankfully, those actions are a small part of Tearaway: Unfolded, ones that do little to taint everything else that’s been built up around them. In nearly every other way, this is an experience that showcases the power and beauty games can hold when crafted by a development team who’s been given the freedom and support to work on a project that comes straight from the heart.

  • One thing did seem to get lost in the move to PS4, though: Tearaway on Vita was an intimate experience. Holding the device close to my face, it felt as though I was privy to a secret directly from Media Molecule. I’m glad to see the adventure on the big screen, but the console experience feels less personal, and the journey loses a little bit in the transition. That said, Tearaway Unfolded is still a great game for families or anyone else who’s looking for an uplifting change of pace.

Tearaway Unfolded successfully translates so many aspects of the original. It remains a distinctive experience which celebrates creativity and fun with undimmed enthusiasm and invention.... Its new areas unsurprisingly offer fun and fresh ideas, but they definitely feel crammed into the narrative of the original which suffers as a consequence. Tearaway Unfolded is a big and bold adaptation, but lacks some of the original's intimate charm.

  • Tearaway Unfolded improves upon the original by adding innovative controls, a handy companion app, augmented reality features via the PS Camera, and a plethora of new content including expended environments with new quests. With this much whimsical content, it's going to be hard to tear away from my TV.

    About the game

Tearaway Unfolded invites you on a journey to help your plucky messenger make a very important delivery. Reach into your TV with your DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller to unleash gusts of wind to unfold hidden areas, confound enemies and ride a paper plane.
