  • Thanks mainly to the simplified economy and streamlined controls, Supreme Commander 2 evades the stigma associated with the RTS genre on consoles, providing more evidence that real-time strategy games can not only work outside the PC, but potentially flourish as well.

  • Controls wise, it works well, which is great - at least as well as Halo Wars. Indeed it's a better balanced and more in depth strategy game than Ensemble's effort. It's also a marked improvement on the 360 version of the first game. But it falls down in some crucial areas: the single-player campaign, ever more crucial to an RTS' appeal, fails to sparkle, and the online experience, while fun, lacks an essential feature. We're delighted the 360 port exists, but Gas Powered Games could have tried harder.

  • Whether you're a newcomer or a veteran tactician, you'd do well to overlook the flaws and enjoy Supreme Commander 2 for being so fun and approachable. The game maintains a difficult balancing act, providing the flexibility of the original Supreme Commander with a user-friendly makeover that lends some freshness and personality. This isn't the next step forward in console strategy games, but it controls well and performs well, making it easy to get lost in some entertaining robot-on-robot action.

The pace is faster, the factions more diverse, and it's a whole lot easier to get the impressively large and powerful experimental units out onto the field, delivering an experience that's more inviting and immediately rewarding. It's a real-time strategy game with a huge amount of depth and a relatively friendly interface that lets you stay in control of large-scale battles between warring robotic factions.

  • While it can generally be easy to write off a console RTS, Supreme Commander 2 on the Xbox 360 is a surprisingly great title. The controls work much better than you'd expect, the build mechanics have been simplified to help new players get into it while still maintaining a good amount of depth for more experienced players, it looks good and runs immeasurably better than its predecessor. If you're looking for an RTS to play on a console, Supreme Commander 2 is definitely one of the few good options available to you.

  • You can have a good time with Supreme Commander 2. It’s just not all that different than the enjoyment to be found in any other solid RTS of the last decade. I would love to see someone mod SupCom 2’s units and research into the original’s overall structure. This sequel finds itself in a no-man’s-land between the ambitious original and traditional RTS. Sending hundreds of robots to their doom is still amusing, though.

  • Supreme Commander 2 was a sequel long-anticipated by fans. Unfortunately, most of them who prefer the complex gameplay style of the original will be disappointed. This sequel is very much an RTS hoping to capture a larger audience by introducing simpler gameplay elements. For newcomers to the series who were originally turned off by the series' high learning curve, this may be your opportunity to jump in and see what massive-scale RTS is all about.

  • Gas Powered Games has committed two sins: the first is the betrayal of its fan base, since Supreme Commander 2 is, unfortunately, an oversimplified version of the 2007 classic. The second one, which in many ways is the worst, is the fact that this is just a nice, working piece of software, which, while not bad or broken, cannot compete with real-time strategies like StarCraft, Command and Conquer: Red Alert, and so on.

  • Supreme Commander 2 probably won't appeal to the hardcore audience of the first game. Still, it tries to make itself more appealing to more people, and in this regard we like to think it succeeds. The story isn't great, but it still serves its purpose in trying to make the player more involved in the universe, and these things usually do prove to be an excellent tutorial to all of the game's features.

  • The game's made enormous compromises, but it's also brought in a superb sense of mayhem and variety. On the one hand it's a shame that it's going to leave much of its intended fanbase cold, but on the other there's nothing especially wrong with the first game, so stick with that if you don't like the sound of this. It hasn't aged particularly, and no-one else has stolen its thunder yet.
