  • Regardless of the new platform, this is a listless take on a game that should be – and has previously been – anything but.

  • Monkey Ball would almost make you cry. You’d slam controllers to the ground. But you’d always come back

  • Both Monkey Race and Monkey Fight, whilst beneficial additions to the game, fail to elongate it sufficiently, although offering an enjoyable variant from the core formula. Yet even for Super Monkey Ball devotees, Super Monkey Ball 3D marks an uninspired debut for the series on the Nintendo 3DS.

  • The extra modes are more forgettable than fun, but the core Monkey Ball experience passes muster, though keep in mind that using the gyroscopic controls kills the 3D

  • What works Super Monkey Ball 3D is just that: 3D and Super Monkey Ball. Unfortunately, that fun is pathetically short-lived, and everything else is a poorly executed afterthought that makes the $40 price tag borderline insulting.

  • Monkey Race and Monkey Fight are poorly executed choices that don't get substantially better when played with friends, and they feel like botched attempts to ape Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Even if you have a burning passion for Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball 3D is likely to douse it with disappointment.

  • It's a real shame there is so little content, as Super Monkey Ball 3D works and plays well, but as it is the game feels like it was rushed to release, and is only worth a rental at best.

  • 3D effect useless with sub par tilt controls, not enough levels, lackluster bonus modes. Had Sega included more levels and modes (Monkey Target and Bowling), this could've been one of the 3DS' premier games. Instead, it fails to live up to the series, and should only receive a purchase if you find it on the cheap.

A stellar action puzzle hybrid with tight controls, Monkey Ball 3D is the best Monkey Ball game since the original, and Sega's found some cool ways to implement the system's 3D functionality and make it relevant to the gameplay. Though it has some big flaws (such as being too short and sporting less than stellar supplementary modes) it offers more variety of gameplay and opportunity for silly fun than any of the other launch titles being offered.

  • If you’ve been a devout Super Monkey Ball fan since the beginning you may be more willing to overlook this entry’s glaring faults. If you haven’t hopped on board the banana bandwagon, however, the weakly implemented 3D and unusable motion controls won’t be enough to make you a believer.
