- 8.0 Subnautica is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PC, Switch and Switch 2. Reviewed on Switch 2.
· Apr 17, 2026 Reviewed on Switch 2Read full review - Subnautica digs its hooks into our most basic, primal fears of the ocean, of drowning, of getting lost in treacherous underwater caverns or succumbing to some great monstrosity in the deepest, darkest depths. On the flip side of this, it also somehow manages to be one of the most chill games we've ever played, absolutely devouring our time as we mine for materials to build bases and upgrades, explore great neon reefs and spin endlessly around in search of more secrets, treasures and tech.
PJ O'Reilly · May 12, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Subnautica is a survival and narrative experience that stands as a benchmark for the genre. The Switch version itself certainly has its drawbacks, but not enough to weigh down the experience too much. Some of them do admittedly affect gameplay mildly, but the strength of Subnautica still pushes through.
John Rairdin · May 11, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Subnautica is one of the better and relatively unique takes on the open-world survival genre that not only executes its expected features well but also provides new ones that help it stand out among its competitors.
Martin Patiño · Dec 20, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Subnautica sees you submerged in a vast and utterly breathtaking underwater world, teeming with secrets and polished off with an unsettling atmosphere that instigates a real sense of thrill as you play. The game has a rewarding crafting system that encourages exploration. Furthermore, the story is full of endearing twists and turns that will take you to the deepest, darkest parts of the alien planet, even against your better judgement.
Nicole Hall · Dec 17, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite some quibbles, Subnautica was one survival game that I didn’t just want to survive in — I flourished and revelled in creating my own life under the sea. It feels unlike anything else in its (rather crowded) genre with its own identity shining through. Quite simply one of the most best and most rewarding survival games you will find on a console — or anywhere.
Jimmy Donnellan · Dec 08, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If you couldn’t tell, I was blown away by Subnautica. What initially appeared to be a knee-high kiddie pool worth of depth, suddenly gives way to a literal ocean of gameplay opportunities. And while it has certain technical limitations, these are certainly not going to discourage the non-critic audience from at least dipping a toe in. It’s easily one of the coolest, engaging, and most gratifying experiences I’ve had with a game in 2018. Come on in! The water’s fine.
Blake Grundman · Dec 04, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Collecting food and water, building an underwater habitat, and surviving the elements are all satisfying aspects of the experience, but that’s only because Subnautica’s palpable ambience, cerebral story, and powerful fear factor compliment that familiar routine with some of the most memorable moments I’ve played in a game of its kind. It’s very likely that you’ll never want to go near a beach again after playing Subnautica, but soak up its array of nautical sights and sounds, and I promise you won’t regret the dive.
Alex Avard · Dec 04, 2018 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - Subnautica shouldn’t be as good as it turned out to be. In an era bloated with so many survival games with more freedom and procedurally generated maps, a game set in a vast ocean with only one map available turned out to be a lot more engaging, rewarding and entertaining than all of its peers. This is one of the biggest surprises of 2018 so far, a must-own in anyone’s Steam library, an indie game that features three times the amount of content than most AAA games that cost three times its price.
Leo Faria · Mar 12, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - After spending just under 60 hours with Subnautica, it’s still a bit strange to say that I’ve actually completed a survival game. Overall, I enjoyed my time under the sea in spite of the flaws. If you’re remotely a fan of survival games, this should definitely be something that you check out. Just bear in mind that there are still a few kinks to be worked out and you’ll have a grand ol’ time.
