- A lot of neat ideas are presented in STAY but they just don’t feel like they were implemented in an effective way. The most interesting segments get interrupted with puzzles that mostly feel like a way of extending the play time. I also ran into a few performance issues like puzzles becoming unresponsive which required a reboot and a chapter restart.
David Lloyd · Oct 04, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you have a penchant for narrative-led adventures where you don't so much as play the game but tell a story, then this should be right up your street. It’s just a pity that its biggest strengths are marred by obtrusive puzzles and sometimes wonky dialogue. Still, this begs the question: should you stay or should you go? I’d definitely plump for the former.
Mike Harradence · Sep 11, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It’s just a shame that my enthusiasm and interest was eventually fully deflated by obtuse puzzles that offer no guidance and ultimately feel superfluous to the game. Get rid of them altogether and you’ve got a gripping interactive story that’s dying to be told. But with the puzzles as they are, STAY is reduced to feeling more like a badly-designed old-school adventure game. I’m gutted. For me, and for Quinn. I truly cared about what was happening to him. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you, Quinn.
Kim Snaith · Jun 04, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Stay isn’t going to be for everyone. This is less of a traditional game and more of an interactive dialogue-heavy experience with a theme that largely revolves around motivation, self-esteem, will-power and anxiety. Stay’s clever “the clock is always ticking” mechanic holds up really well, as does the main character’s mood system. Though, issues with delayed input and the, at times, irritating pace, holds it back slightly.
Mark Sherwood · May 29, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Despite some frustrating and obtuse puzzles that hinder rather than enrich the narrative, STAY is a simple tale told with style and delivers an important lesson that we could all learn from.
Jimmy Donnellan · May 16, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Stay is a slow-burner which feels uneasy throughout with its dark and seedy-feeling online chat setup. There’s some good story to unveil here, but things are too one-way to make for a great game.
Oliver Roderick · Nov 11, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - STAY can’t be faulted for its aspirations and the attempt to make a believable character in Quinn, to create an individual that the player will want to help. However, the result is a near endless stream of lacklustre dialogue that made it incredibly difficult to stay to the end.
Adrian Burrows · Oct 05, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - STAY is a very unusual experience. Its unique approach to tracking time and using it as an influential factor on a character’s well-being makes it the kind of game you really need to try, but it’s one that comes with enough caveats that might make it less appealing to certain Switch owners. However, with some well-written dialogue, a mysterious house that keeps getting stranger and all manner of narrative paths, items, rooms and endings to unlock, there’s plenty here to warrant repeated plays. Just don’t nod off while you’re playing, or wander out of the house. Poor old Quinn...
Dom Reseigh-Lincoln · Sep 21, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Stay has so much promise, and initially gripped me in a very personal way. As the story goes on though, ridiculous puzzles and multiple restarts will frustrate you, souring the overall experience.
Chris Hyde · Sep 18, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - He's a loveable and well-designed character, who is witty and charming, which makes it all the more disappointing that the controls during the puzzles, and the difficulty of them, detracted somewhat from our experience. It's a very different game, that will give you lots to think about, but truth be told it felt like a mouse would have worked better than a controller. With a better controller layout, the score would have been higher.
