- The Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion never lacks in the sheer spectacle of its creativity. It’s Nintendo at its best, for sure, taking what we have come to expect from Splatoon 2’s core experience only to throw the rulebook out the window to astound with freshly inked ideas. More, please.
Alex Seedhouse · Sep 20, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion is a reminder of how good the series’ single-player content can be. Brimming with tense, precision-based challenges and creative ways to force you out of your gameplay comfort zone, Octo Expansion is a terrific reason to once again take the plunge into Splatoon 2.
Brian Shea · Jul 09, 2018 Reviewed on Switch - Octo Expansion is neither, and in fact, I'd argue it's even better than the original game's single-player campaign. Through the 15-or-so hours it'll take you to complete the expansion 100%, you'll be led through a jungle gym full of rails to ride, targets to shoot, hazards to stunt over, and enemies to face down. And when you finally catch your breath after having reached the end, you won't be able to resist diving back in to see if you can finally complete that speedrun challenge with the carbon roller, damn it all.
RobotsFightingDinosaurs · Jun 22, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Octo Expansion throws plenty of both fun and serious challenges at you, between its expansive amount of levels and a multi-tiered finale that doesn’t disappoint. These trials provide worthy so many challenges for those who wish to hone their mechanical skills for upcoming multiplayer matches, that I wish this had been Splatoon 2’s base campaign all along.
Brendan Graeber · Jun 20, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you’re craving more Splatoon, this will definitely suffice. Other than a few less than inspiring levels that you’ll thankfully move through quickly (or just skip), this is a worthwhile break from the multiplayer modes we’ve been playing through since Splatoon 2’s launch. Even if you haven’t touched the original campaign, now is a great time to enjoy this single-player Splatoon experience.
Mitchell Parton · Jun 18, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - 80 stages is a lot to get through, but you only need to earn the four thangs by visiting the critical path locations -- a rough estimate for that is around five hours (culminating in a more story-esque gauntlet finish), double if you try to do everything. As cool as the "agent" and underground concept is, a lot of the aesthetic shift feels like a re-skin of sorts.
Chris Carter · Jun 14, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - As a single player experience it outmatches the standard Octo Canyon mode significantly, and even though it does allow players to acquire exclusive items, it manages to avoid affecting any of the mechanics of online play, so non-purchasers will never be at a disadvantage. If you’re a fan of Splatoon in any capacity and you want more to sink your beak into, Octo Expansion is an unwavering must-have.
Alex Olney · Jun 14, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion serves up something that is satisfying, challenging and entertaining in equal measure. It won’t redefine the core game, and you’ll probably finish it in a week, but it’s joyous exuberance more than makes up for it. A must for any Splatoon fan.
John Reid · Jul 04, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - There are so many thoughtful stages, highlighting Splatoon's unique make-up of shooting and platforming mechanics that it is well-worth seeing them all rather than being halted by one specific task. While the fact that it's a modular design could be equated with laziness for some, Nintendo deserves credit for producing something robust and unforgiving that will test even the most dedicated of fans.
Tomas Barry · Jul 03, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion basically manages to turn the single-player side of the game from a tutorial to a solid fully-formed mode. Each mission with Agent 8 is better than any solo Splatoon content we've seen before, not only in terms of design and creativity but also in terms of difficulty, and the challenges are so good that we almost forgot that we can now play with the Octarians online, or that we have new items for the multiplayer.
