- I honestly didn’t think I could love Spelunky any more than I already did, but to see it translated so perfectly to a console that feels made for it is the icing on the cake. Spelunky is now available to pretty much everyone, and if I can teach you one thing from this review, it’s that you need to go and play it. It’s a modern masterpiece that you’ll never unlearn.
George Foster · Sep 14, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Some aspects related to Spelunky‘s gameplay loop and the quality of its RNG features have aged poorly when compared to more modern and feature-rich roguelikes. Yet considering this was basically the progenitor of half of the indie games in the market, I have to commend it for still being visually appealing and tons of fun after all these years. I am more than sure that its 2020 successor, Spelunky 2, is a lot more robust, but if you want to take a deep dive into the history of modern indie gaming, Spelunky is a pretty good starting point.
Leo Faria · Aug 28, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Nearly a decade on, Spelunky still has all the fundamentals in place and remains a great entry in the roguelike genre. Solid gameplay, plenty of secrets, and an addictive gameplay loop make for an easy game to recommend, though we’d say you should come into this one prepared to die a lot before you really ‘get it’. Whatever your tolerance for difficulty may be, Spelunky proves to be a nice fit for the Switch; it’s certainly worth your time if you never tried it before.
Mitch Vogel · Aug 26, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Spelunky feels dated. Since its initial release, roguelikes and lites have evolved a great deal. That evolution, of course, is due in part to Spelunky. A daily challenge seed with a leaderboard is something I first heard about in Spelunky.
Joshua Robin · Aug 25, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Spelunky's moving parts are simple – the free version was built using the entry-level game development tool, Game Maker – but they click together in ways smart enough that they've kept me joyfully exploring its depths for years, without ever reaching the bottom. You don't need to be careful about this. Just buy it.
Graham Smith · Sep 10, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall Spelunky is an addictive platformer which, despite it being so easy to die, has great playability and clever game mechanics. If you are willing to break through its initial sheer desire to kill you quickly then you will discover a game that is filled with great charm and replayability.
Richard Archer · Sep 03, 2013 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - If you are the kind of masochist who enjoys the hardest and most punishing of games I would recommend Spelunky to you in an instant. The feeling of achievement when you conquer a cave system is unmatched by games which constantly hold your hand and throw health at you every step of the way.
Craig Daveson · Sep 03, 2013 Reviewed onRead full review - The Vita plays the perfect host to Spelunky. Its intense, fast-paced gameplay feels right at home on the portable device, where quick stints of gameplay can help to alleviate the frustration that the title’s unforgiving difficulty inevitably unearths. If you’re fortunate enough to dig your way past the rock-solid opening hours, a never-ending supply of treasure eagerly awaits your discovery.
Robert Ramsey · Sep 02, 2013 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Whilst 2D platformers are pretty common on the Vita now due to the influx of indie titles, Spelunky truly does feel difficult and while at times it’s brutal I don’t see it losing place on my already cramped memory card soon. The fact that its cross buy and doesn’t cost that much also helps sweeten the deal but for the casual gamer not. I don’t think Spelunky is as close to perfection as some reviews have said but it’s certainly a brilliant game that’s worth your time and attention…just make sure you’re feeling calm, your walls and floors are coated with rubber or your Vita is in a smash proof case.
Jon Harding-Rathbone · Sep 02, 2013 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - There’s absolutely no reason not to give Spelunky a go, it’s probably one of the best games out for the moment on the Vita and even on the PlayStation 3. You’ll be coming back to it time and time again, not just to hone your skills or take revenge at it, but also to see what’s next. It’s a brilliantly conceived idea that makes for a great reason to just keep going at it. The rewards are boundless. If you survive, that is.
