Critic Reviews
- Spellspire has already been released on other consoles, but I believe it feels more at home on the Switch, with the nature of the game and the fact that it is best played it short, five-minute bursts at a time. It is just such a perfect fit. It also of course benefits by having a touch screen which is easily the best way to play the game, as it allows for much quicker word making. As such, I played the game mostly in handheld mode.
Jamie Ward · Feb 12, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Spellspire is simple, unique, and will make you feel like your English skills are on par with a 10-year old. The fun blend of word puzzle and fantasy adventure is enough to flesh out hours of content, and the snappy interface makes it easy to jump in for a few floors of spellbinding action. Longer play sessions wear a bit thin due to the need to grind, and the inconsistent difficulty makes progression feel less satisfying than it really should.
Conor McMahon · Nov 29, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Spellspire is a fun puzzle game that will keep your attention for a while. You can pick it up and play anytime and the difficulty level is just right for all types of players. Fans of this genre will definitely want to check it out.
Kaelyn Daugherty · Nov 25, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - On its own, Spellspire is an enjoyable word RPG, somewhat in the same vein as a Puzzle Quest. The replayable nature makes it a nice game to have on hand as a complement to the Switch’s other games. It’s a focused and fun twist on a known formula, well worth checking out if you need a break from Mario.
Neal Ronaghan · Nov 09, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Spellspire still offers a truly fun and unique experience to the word game genre. It’s a clean little package with some chuckles here and there in the weapon and enemy descriptions. If you’re looking for a new word game, or just something to keep you entertained for hours on end, then Spellspire will be well worth your investment.
Daniel Batoff · Jun 17, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If you're looking for a chance to flex your mental muscles and spell words then Spellspire will likely be a good choice. That said, its mobile roots are often too apparent in the progression system and presentation, which drag the overall package down. While not a wholehearted recommendation, it's definitely got a niche it'll fit into quite nicely - and if that's your bag, then great.
Kresnik · Jun 14, 2017 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - There is little to complain about with Spellspire. It’s a jolly little game, with a colorful art style and some nice touches of humor. But this is a word puzzle game; if you’re not great with word games like Boggle or Scrabble, then it may not be the game for you.
John Whitehouse · Jun 01, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - For most gamers curious about Spellspire I would recommend downloading the mobile version and spending your $10 elsewhere. For that same amount of money, you could get Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment, or if you’re looking for a puzzle experience and own a 3DS you could buy two superb BoxBoy! games for the same price. This isn’t to say that Spellspire isn’t worth your money, because it might be if you love word games and want a word puzzler to play on console for potentially hours on end. But even then I suggest trying the mobile version first — Spellspire is a game built for phones and gains little while losing a lot in its move to a large screen, controller-based, mandated stationary play of the console ecosystem.
Kyle Rentschler · May 23, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Ultimately that’s a major problem I had with Spellspire. It’s not much fun to lose another level because the RNG gods decided that my letters would be no good for this one. When you’re getting lucky then it actually clicks together in a fun way. It just doesn’t do so nearly as much as it should, and my quest to find a fantastic spelling RPG will have to continue.
Samuel Guglielmo · May 23, 2017 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Spellspire has great graphics, charming characters, and a smart game mechanic that focuses on quick spelling but adds some casual RPG fun for those who like a little strategy with their wordplay. It’s certainly worth the free download for spelling enthusiasts or even those who just want a little brain workout.
