- Spec Ops: The Line is a solid, action packed shooter that sets itself apart by demonstrating the brutal realities of war. The fragile lines of morality are easily blurred, and sometimes, only visible when crossed. When lives are at stake, and choices have to be made – can you make the right ones? Not only is your life and sanity at stake, but those of your squad mates are too. One thing is for certain: when you cross The Line, you’ll never return the same.
Christopher Ingram · Aug 18, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - His desperate rationalizations might seem like a weak salve, but at least it gave him (and us) something to soothe the pain. After all, he doesn’t want to believe he’s becoming the villain – he wanted to be the hero, and we were right there with him. Spec Ops’s story isn’t perfect, but it's the rare shooter that actually attempted to make us feel something other than adrenaline, and we’ll be damned if we don’t respect it for that.
Hollander Cooper · Aug 14, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Spec Ops: The Line is a cut above the usual generic military shooter with solid gameplay backed up by a story that pulls you in and doesn't let go. And it makes you think. It's a grim day at the beach for sure, but then war is hell.
Richard Walker · Jul 03, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Difficulty spikes aren't the only problem. In eight hours of gameplay, six of it is spent almost entirely in sand. Despite this, The Line is certainly competent enough, and set pieces make for entertaining fodder between narrative sequences that inspired a critical eye, of which my junior year english class required of me.
Daniel Bischoff · Jun 29, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - The story in Spec Ops: The Line isn't amazing, but the way that it's told really stands out and, in many ways, saves the entire project from being a complete waste of time. But that doesn't make it easy to recommend. It delivers some interesting ideas that approach the messed-up things that often happen in war-based video games in ways that actually make sense.
Jeff Gerstmann · Jun 29, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Spec Ops: The Line is the kind of game we think we want. It aims to be thoughtful and mature as it ponders our recurring role as the trigger-happy mass murderer. And yet it casts us in that same spot again, making a boring job out of it and highlighting why even "stupid" games can better engage, entertain and challenge. Heavy subject matter makes Spec Ops lopsided in a different way, and that's not really a win for games.
Ludwig Kietzmann · Jun 27, 2012 Reviewed on X360 - I didn’t expect to like Spec Ops: The Line, but despite my initial misgivings and fighting some quirks on the control front, 2K and Yager surpassed my hopes on so many levels. The Line rivals thatgamecompany’s Journey in terms of overall impact, serving as a brave step forward for developers who want to help us get more from games than just gunplay. If you’re tired of the same old firefight, you really ought to play it.
Brandon Justice · Jun 27, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Despite criticism in all other departments, the gritty story supersedes the game's mediocrity elsewhere, and finally delivers something outside the box. It dives into a disturbing realism that war, racism, and the psychological repercussions that could ensue, going far beyond the dramatic fluff that we've seen in other shooters.
Sean Engemann · Jun 27, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Spec Ops: The Line is one of the most interesting military shooters we’ve played. It’s heavily story-driven and it’ll engage you through the 6-8 hour campaign. You’ll question everything at the end, including your own judgments, and you’ll no doubt feel compelled to play again—that’s always a complement for a shooter.
Adam Dolge · Jun 27, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - At the end of the day I enjoyed my time with Spec Ops: The Line, as it is a fairly good game. The story managed to keep me involved, the choices I had to make made me question why I made them (yes, I know they are not real choices people), and the production values, such as the visuals and sound, were solid.

About the game
It's been 6 months since Dubai was wiped off the map by a cataclysmic sandstorm. Once the world's most fantastical city, Dubai is now its most opulent ruin. Ravaged by cataclysmic sandstorms, the city lies buried, reclaimed by the desert. Abandoned, it has become a no-man's-land for refugees and outlaws. While most people fled the now-barren wasteland, U.S. Army Colonel John Konrad and the 33rd Infantry remained behind to protect those incapble of escape. Unable to contact anyone in Dubai, the world believed Konrad and his team dead, until they picked up a weak distress signal. As Captain Walker, you and your squad of Delta Operators infiltrate the trecherous region to locate survivors.
