- Lastly, it is also worth keeping in mind that the game has seemingly been review bombed to an extent on Steam because the patch that nerfed the difficulty appears to have divided the community. So, go into it knowing that Souldiers isn’t particularly difficult, but the rest should make up for that.
LCLupus · Jul 01, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Souldiers has interesting core mechanics and the sort of art style that will certainly attract fans of the Metroidvania genre or those looking to activate their nostalgia. But the story is mostly there as a reason for the action and combat can quickly become overwhelming in terms of difficulty. The game also has significant problems with the camera and there are plenty of reports of corrupted saves.
Cosmin Vasile · Jun 17, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The gorgeous art direction, lengthy campaign, and high degree of replayability, combined with combat that required strategic thinking made for one of the better Metroidvania titles in recent memory. If the game’s technical performance can be improved with a patch or two down the line, then Souldiers on the Switch is going to be a must-have title. We can’t vouch for the game on other platforms, but if the aforementioned performance issues aren’t present there, you can easily bump up our final score with a point or two, as it reflects the technical issues present in the game at the time of review.
SebastiaanRaats · Jun 15, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - After playing Souldiers for a few dozen hours I can say that it has a ton of potential, despite its issues I continue to want to play the game when I sit down and turn on my Xbox. The Metroidvania side of the gameplay really shines – the abilities, exploration, and world-building – but the game is marred by bugs and problematic design decisions that make the difficult souls-inspired combat feel less rewarding and much more frustrating.
Jake Plant · Jun 10, 2022 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Souldiers is great for those looking for a new action platformer with a dose of challenge. Unfortunately, the game’s easy mode does very little in the way of making the experience, well, easier, so there’s some serious difficulty here.
Pyre Kavanagh · Jun 10, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, Souldiers is a unique title that honors old-school tough-as-nails platformers while offering something familiar to contemporary RPG enthusiasts. I wish I knew that going in but I suppose It all worked out well in the end. I ended up liking the game for completely different reasons. And hopefully, other players can give this title a try too. Maybe once the balancing issues have been sorted out.
Erickson Melchor · Jun 09, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Souldiers is one of those games that’s disappointing simply because a small number of critical issues hold it back from the greatness it comes so close to achieving. A large world to explore, tough combat system, and an outstanding art style are weighed down by ridiculous load times and poor difficulty balancing.
Mitch Vogel · Jun 03, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - As it is, Souldiers is a very enjoyable entry in the metroidavania genre – providing you have plenty of skill and/or patience. It doesn’t offer anything that’s genuinely new, but most of its components complement each other well.
Richard Seagrave · Jun 02, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Just in case I haven’t made it clear enough, Souldiers is absolutely a modern-day classic. It’s also in the running for my favorite game of 2022—it’s really just that good. Between its engaging level design, gorgeous visual appearance, addictive combat mechanics, and its class-based system giving it three times the replaybility… you really owe it to yourself to get this game if you consider yourself a Metroidvania fan.
Kenny McKee · May 31, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - For a game composed of familiar elements, Souldiers still managed to surprise me. If nothing else, the game’s execution is exemplary. Even if you’ve played a ton of pixel art, soulsborne, and Metroidvania titles, this particular blend is a satisfying one. The art direction is beautiful, the controls are tight, and design is rock solid. If you’re looking for a new 2D adventure, Souldiers will easily scratch that itch.
