  • The Sorcery! series of mobile games are possibly the most accomplished in the text-based adventure genre, and this first installment ushers us into a world full of combat, exploration, and, well, sorcery.

  • When you get right down to it, it's hard to imagine how Inkle Studios could have done much better breathing life back into a franchise older than most folks who play video games. The design is tight, clean, engaging and most importantly of all, fun in the old style. It's enough to make an old grognard pick up the mobile version just to play Episode 3, which is already out via Google Play and the App Store.

  • Sorcery is essentially a choose your own adventure novel with a few riddles and numbers thrown in. As a mobile game it's perfect, allowing you to stop whenever you want and rewind if you haven't been able to keep track of the plot. As a PC game, however, it struggles to hold your attention for long periods of time.

  • Sorcery!'s shortcomings, such as they are, tend to be more technically-rooted. Though it's been reasonably well-adapted for PC, the interface still feels optimized for touch, with large elements that look fine on a phone or tablet screen but are a tad oversized to players using a mouse. The game, or rather the story, is also technically incomplete.

  • Fans will be able to get a lot of mileage out of this, thanks to the range of choices to carry the story forward at every turn. However, at this price, it’s hard to recommend to players who are neither into gamebooks nor have heard of the book series. If you do decide to embark on this quest, be sure to practice your spells — and watch out for the Manticore.

  • Sorcery! is a very high quality game with a great plot, an excellent old school feel and captivating gameplay. If you’re a fan of Fighting Fantasy it’s a no brainier.

Sorcery! relies on the often-ignored power of strong writing, and it’s better for doing so. It’s a prime example of what can happen when traditional storytelling gets along with contemporary game design. Sometimes leaving the flashiness of an adventure to our imagination is a better tool than cutscenes and surround sound.

  • Much like the book series it's based on, Sorcery! is quite a departure from typical Fighting Fantasy fodder we've seen on the App Store. Is it better? Not quite, but it's a very worthy equal. While Tin Man Games's titles capture the authenticity of the Fighting Fantasy novels, Inkle's Sorcery! re-imagines it, creating a more fantastical world but one that isn't quite as faithful in terms of its appearance.

  • Perhaps the highest praise I can offer is that this is one of the very, very few games, and certainly the only one in recent memory, that gives me second thoughts about my otherwise happy and contented membership in Team Android. If you have any kind of interest at all in fantasy fiction or role-playing games, you simply must play Steve Jackson’s Sorcery! It really is just that good.

  • In many ways, Sorcery is one of the better Move games, and really does show off what you can do with the system. The controls are not only responsive, but they show a subtlety we don’t normally see in motion-controlled games. It’s just too bad that what could’ve been a fun, magical romp is deflated by generic fantasy tropes and equally uninspired visuals and sounds.
