- It takes a familiar genre, nails the fundamentals, and then builds upon those with unrivaled ship variety and its teleportation mechanic that is so core to the experience and blows the genre wide open to the extent that I’m not sure I want to ever play another shmup that doesn’t have this feature.
Shane Boyle · Nov 25, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Visually the game opts for the vertical style seen in a lot of games of this type. I love that there are tons of filters and screen borders to unlock as well. Even more incentive to keep playing.
Ken McKown · Nov 08, 2022 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Sophstar soars above some of the other arcade shooter offerings on Switch because of the sheer amount of content and replayability. Going through its Arcade Mode on different difficulties and using new ships is a genuine treat because each one feels distinct from the one before. While it's a bit annoying that sleep mode seems to regularly disconnect the game from its online servers, requiring a manual reconnection in the menu, there's little else about the game that is worth criticizing.
Jordan Rudek · Oct 28, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It's still a competently assembled title: smooth, clean, and enjoyable. What it lacks in gravity and bravado it makes up for in balanced scoring mechanics and an interesting teleportation twist. While its Cadet Mode is its brightest spark, the main campaign shoots for the stars but falls just short of reaching them.
Tom Massey · Oct 27, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you like a shoot ‘em up, then Sophstar is an easy sell. It is challenging and manages to pack a good amount of content into a small package. Even if you don’t usually like shooters, the sheer variety of ways to play and tackle the levels will mean that you are likely to find a combo that works. There’s a very good chance you’ll have a decently enjoyable time with Sophstar. Sophstar is on the Xbox Store
Paul Renshaw · Nov 18, 2022 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Sophstar is a good vertical shmup that's bursting with many unique controllable ships so it makes for quite a varied and fulfilling arcade shooting experience. It may have rather generic stages but its overall sense of non-stop action still puts it on my recommended list.

About the game
Trailers & Screenshots:
Sub-Lieutenant Soph has lived in Galanian for her whole life, having no memory of when her existence started, and no idea of how she developed her teleporting powers. But after being sent for a recon mission, all of what she knows about herself is about to change. Sophstar is a vertical arcade shoot'em up with heavy inspiration from the best games of the genre from the 90s, while adding new-exciting features and regular game modes for both casual home players and hardcore arcade fans.
