  • While the Game Gear games in Sonic Origins Plus don’t look, sound, or play great, the problem comes down to these games not being that good originally — not that they're bad ports. Buy Sonic Origins Plus for the Genesis games and to play as Amy, but don't expect the Game Gear games to run away with your heart.

  • Of course, the Origins Plus expansion is being layered on top of an existing product. You can read the review for that one here. If you’re buying the whole game for the first time, it’s not all bad news. You’ve still got four classic games to play. Plus, each one has the Anniversary mode, which rules.

  • Sonic Origins Plus still falls short of being definitive. There are a smattering of Genesis titles still missing, which range in quality from passable to mediocre, and are a relevant part of the character’s fledgling chapters. 2002’s Mega Collection included these — as well as, if you want to be nitpicky, the untarnished soundtrack for Sonic 3 — where Origins seeks instead to refine the mascot at his peak.

  • Of all the ways Sega and Sonic Team could have failed when making an expansion for a collection of old games, I’m just glad to report that Sonic Origins Plus wasn’t one of them. I don’t particularly think any of the inclusions in this package are game changers, be it the inclusions of new characters on older games or the many, many emulated ROMs of Game Gear titles, but the overall package is quite good. Considering the price tag and amount of content on offer, I’d say this is an easy recommendation.

  • While Sonic Origins Plus’ additions feel like they should have been in the base game, Amy is a delight to play as. She’ll have you playing these four excellent games in new ways, despite some odd design decisions. Unfortunately, the selection of Game Gear games have not aged well and are marred by some terrible sound emulation.

  • The new playable characters, Game Gear games, and other content feel just barely worth the upgrade fee, but there’s no escaping the sense that Sega could’ve done a lot more for this update and chose not to. While the overall package is a strong one, we’d give the new content of this expansion a very light recommendation as it does ultimately feel worth the price tag (for existing owners).

  • Sonic Origins Plus had the opportunity to really deliver a collection of classic Sonic games that fans could experience on newer hardware. While Amy’s playable inclusion is fantastic, the poor state of some Game Gear titles introduces too many points of frustration to overlook. Features like the Classic Music and Premium Fun packs should’ve been a free update.

  • Sonic Origins Plus still can't be considered the most comprehensive collection of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog titles. From a completionist's standpoint, it would've been nice to have Sonic 3D Blast, and the Genesis version of Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Others will lament the fact that the original music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remains missing. The inclusion of 12 Game Gear titles makes this feel like a better value, while the modified versions of the original four titles are still a great way for new players to experience these classics without dealing with the things that don't fly in modern game design.

  • Still, some will get a kick out of being able to access this collection of Game Gear classics, that would now cost and arm and a leg to buy physically. And even if you’re not interested in them, being able to play as Amy and Knuckles in more titles might be enough to make this worthy of a purchase. But as previously mentioned, it’s those new to this collection that get the best deal; the Sonic Origins Plus all-in-one bundle also includes the Premium Fun and the Classics Sounds pack, adding new missions, music tracks and more to the game. Buy it physically and you even get a mini art-book.

  • Sonic Origins Plus is a complete and thrilling collection of Sonic’s heyday, at least if you stick with the core four remastered games. Because the addition of a couple of playable characters and 12 inconsequential Game Gear games with the Plus expansion to this package doesn’t necessarily move the needle, it’s impossible to boost the rating from the review of the original base game.
