  • With 12 massive zones to explore, three characters to play as, and tons of hidden content and Easter eggs to experience, there’s a whole lot of bang for your buck crammed into Sonic Mania. And with how much fun it is, you’ll be hard-pressed not to try to squeeze every bit of content out of it that you can. What else can I say? If you’ve been waiting for Sonic’s grand return to the spotlight, your wish has finally been granted. Sonic Mania is as good as it gets, proving that sometimes a franchise needs to rediscover its roots to move forward.

  • A breakneck platformer that uses classic Sonic as a foundation for something fresh and exciting.

  • Speaking of nostalgia, some might knock Sonic Mania a bit for playing off nostalgia the way it does, but does it really matter when it’s done this well? At least for the moment, Sonic is back!

  • Regardless, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Sonic Mania, and it’s a clear example of just how successful fan-created passion projects can be when they’re nurtured by a studio. I’m also hopeful that the 2D journey doesn’t end here either, but encourages Sega to continue further down this road with even more new content in the future. In the meantime, 3D fans have Sonic Forces to look forward to when it launches later this year.

  • Incredible levels, beautiful art, a fantastic soundtrack and classic gameplay make Sonic Mania the best Sonic game in years.

  • Everything from the presentation to the music score is designed to keep the old guard smiling for a long time. I don’t expect new gamers, younger gamers or fans of chubby red plumbers to understand the sentiments behind this review, but finally the Sonic the Hedgehog we yearned is finally back. While the path ahead for the blue hedgehog may be uncertain, we have a Sonic game we can keep coming back to for generations to come and perhaps play with our own children, in our own cold conservatories.

Sonic Mania is the Sonic game fans have been wanting. It hits all the notes (and problems) the originals had. But it is also why the series has remained relevant for so long. It delivers speed, fun, and chaos (no pun intended) all in one package. It also finally removes the stigma that all Sonic games are terrible. Let’s hope Forces is as well polished and enjoyable as Mania is.

  • It’s hard to write a bad word about Sonic Mania. It’s a complete, classic package, at a great price. Each character you play as feels just as you remember it, but sharper. Each classic stage starts as you remember it, and then transforms into something completely new. Sonic Mania is a love letter to fans and a testament to the Blue Blur himself - a modern classic that Sonic fans old and new have to experience.

  • Sonic Mania is a game for people who grew up with Sonic the Hedgehog and have been waiting for a return to those 2D roots. This is one for those who have always wanted a retro-fabulous entry after enjoying or weathering 3D outings. It is for people who have heard good things about the series over the years, but never played. Everyone will find something to love about the hedgehog’s latest outing.

  • Sega took a chance in letting a longtime Sonic fan and a few smaller dev teams bring the original 16-bit iteration of their mascot back into the modern era, and the result is Sonic Mania, one of the purest and most enjoyable Sonic games we’ve ever been given. The question isn’t if this experiment in reviving classic Sonic was successful or not—the question is what happens next.
