  • The adventure and role-playing aspect is a lot of fun, especially with soccer so integrated into the world, but the weak soccer matches keep it from truly being a great sports role-playing game. Buoyed by its charming and humorous premise, Soccer Story provides a satisfying adventure and a different type of soccer game, but one that doesn’t quite score a hat-trick.

  • The idea is solid, and the execution is adequate. There’s a charm, there are decent visuals. But it’s a game that’s based on a gimmick and not much else. But if you’ve done everything there is to do in Golf Story and want more of that, Soccer Story is not the worse way to spend a few hours.

  • The other aspect that doesn’t help is that, for an RPG, Soccer Story lacks characters to latch onto. The lack of character portraits and meaningful dialogue means that your team is effectively made of cardboard cutouts with roles stamped onto them, and you only interact with them while playing matches.

  • Soccer Story has an idea worth fleshing out but is let down by appalling stability. The gameplay loop has fun moments, but unintuitive buttons fight against that, keeping it from excelling. The football notion has me smitten, and I felt nostalgic for my childhood due to a specific quest with goal lines constructed by adjacent objects. The caveat here is that it desperately needs tweaks and reworked controls. As it stands, I’d forego lobs because of the difficulty to pull off, eliminating a whole mechanic. Still, I could see my niece loving all the bright colour

  • Soccer Story delivers a colorful, charming take on the 'sports adventure', bursting at the seams with earnest effort and care from the development team. It's a fun experience, though it doesn't reach the heights of the genre's most famous release. Bugs and hitches pop up occasionally too, but if you're seeking some light entertainment and happen to love football, its cute visuals and the charming world make it worth consideration.

  • The football minigame isn’t fantastic either; computer-controlled goalkeepers are outrageously agile, and the ball will often stop rolling at the edge of the box, which can’t be entered by forwards, preventing second-chance opportunities.

  • Soccer Story is a good mix of soccer matches and adventure elements, with a world packed with side activities and cute details. It takes a little while to get used to the quick, tackle-driven matches. Playing an upgraded team against a solid computer opponent is both challenging and fun.

  • Soccer Story is a valiant attempt at a Sports RPG, but it falls victim to a repetitive story and quest structure. Its light narrative quickly falls to the side, with annoying bugs taking its place. Perhaps a player can find value in the endless amount of running and collectible items to be found but, for the most part, its lively world and polished soccer ball physics aren’t enough to make this an enjoyable experience.

  • Sports Story is a great idea that struggles to reach its full potential. While the soccer-focused tasks use the theme in fun and innovative ways, too many missions include menial tasks. On the pitch, the gameplay is basic and due to this, it doesn’t manage to string enough elements together to deliver a clinical finish.

  • Soccer Story’s art style combines the 2D sprites of classic Zelda games with the blocky environments of Minecraft. The music is quiet and relaxed to reflect the game’s overall lighthearted tone. In classic RPG fashion, dialogue is text only and contains some clever jokes and dialogue. There are also some brief vocal clips during games.
