- Skate 3 is the best skateboarding game available today. With a further refinement of that revolutionary “Flick-It” control scheme, tighter online integration, and a great skatepark creator, hours will be lost to this game if you buy it, and every moment of that time will be spent in skateboarding bliss. Owners of the previous two entries should definitely pick this title up, and for new players to the series or those who do cannot grasp the control scheme, a new Easy mode gives you a bit more leeway to make the game more accessible.
Paulmichael Contreras · May 19, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Once the game takes off the training wheels, you'll likely spend as much time perfecting a rail grind as exploring the alternate game modes, which is exactly what the developers of Skate 3 planned. The controls are so intuitive and the physics so spot-on, that it really does feel like skating - even to a hopeless mongo-pusher like me. Which makes it all the more fun to skate off that cliff.
Russ Pitts · May 18, 2010 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Skate 3, to be blunt, doesn't offer a great deal that's different to the previous two games in the series, with the added team, online and sharing functionality being the key additions. That said, the core gameplay is as good as it's ever been, the new city is great, and there's no denying that the sense of achievement when you finally nail a trick after hours of practice is almost unrivalled in the sports genre. It's more of the same, but the series is still in a league of its own.
Tom Orry · May 12, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Skate 3 does suffer somewhat from familiarity (the gaming community is just about skating-gamed out) and it isn't pick-up-and-play easy, but this certainly is an excellent entry in the genre that rewards technical ability, presents a beautiful open-world to romp around in, foments a true community experience like no other title, and even gives players a creative outlet. Overall, this is a great game that deserves to be in your collection, assuming you're in the market for a virtual skater.
Jonathan Marx · May 11, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Though the career mode itself isn't especially thrilling on its own, the online focus makes everything in Skate 3 feel like a bigger deal. If you're strictly a solo player, you'll probably find Skate 3 to be a sterile, temporary environment that doesn't feel as inviting as the previous game may have. But if you've even dabbled in the online world of Skate 2, you'll surely enjoy what Skate 3 has to offer.
Jeff Gerstmann · May 11, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Clearly, Skate 3 has its fair share of mostly minor problems. But this is the best game in the series regardless, and given the state of Activision's Tony Hawk series right now, that makes it the best skateboarding game around by default. Skate 3 isn't likely to win you over if its predecessors failed to do so, but it goes a great job of catering to newcomers and experienced players alike, and it's one of very few games that makes even the act of breaking your own bones fun.
Justin Calvert · May 11, 2010 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - But in the end, Skate 3's positive attributes just aren't enough to save it from feeling like an iterative failure. The series has been coasting on its fantastic engine, which still presents the most realistic videogame skateboarding, since its inception, but it's just not enough anymore. Without much positive innovation to give it momentum, it's becoming increasingly difficult to resist the temptation to bail out.
David Hinkle · May 11, 2010 Reviewed on X360 - It would have been silly for EA to completely overhaul the already-solid Skate engine for this third installment, so it’s really no surprise that the game does share quite a few similarities with its predecessors. But there’s no mistake that Skate 3 simply isn’t a rehash of what’s coming before. The create and share features offer up so much potential that EA may have presented a problem for itself.
Nick Chester · May 11, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Skate 3 is by no means a disappointing addition to the series, but those who sunk their cash into last year's Skate 2 really don't have much of a reason to take the plunge here. Thankfully the gameplay is still the most impressive virtual representation of skateboarding around and the new audio treatment will delight fans of the series.
Nate Ahearn · May 11, 2010 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - The Skate series’ focus on what’s important means gamers can pick up a copy with a sense of confidence that they will get what they pay for. While this latest title doesn’t take any huge risks, I would argue that’s a good thing. Skate has always been one of those rare games where you can just aimlessly play with no goals or objectives. With the addition of the park creator, this is only increased with the limitless possibility of player-created content.
